We were greeted with a warm welcome on Thursday night at the Waterside Theatre in Aylesbury. We were there to see Rhythm of the Dance, performed by The National Dance Company of Ireland.
Aylesbury is a modern theatre but has a homely feel, I have said it before and my opinion remains the same that outside of London and the very old fashion theatres, Aylesbury is my favourite.
A large, light, spacious foyer was buzzing with excitement as we waited to go through to be seated in the auditorium. If you have never been to Aylesbury please go and experience the wonderful theatre that they have. Staff work at speed and are always found to be polite and courteous. Toilets are clean and tidy. Parking is found nearby with a small fee payable.
I was really looking forward to seeing this show in its Anniversary Year. 20 years to be exact.
The show has been enjoyed worldwide and watched by millions – tonight was my turn!
Rhythm of the Dance is an extravaganza, a Celtic delight of dance, music and song.
The excited audience were thrilled by the lightning speed of the dancers that was equally matched by the speeds of the hands of the musicians; we were treated to the sounds of the traditional Uilleann pipes, Irish Bodhran, fiddles, flutes, accordions, banjo and whistles.
The show had a fantastic balance of dance, music and songs, times only the dancers were on stage and the sound was that of the shoes tapping on the floor and then we would be enthralled by the musicians who played in front of a screen showing rolling hills and traditional Irish scenes. The two would then proceed to join forces, an enthralling spectacle indeed.
The standout moment for me was the lone female lead, dancing alongside the musician playing the Bodhran – a dance off if you like, again here lightning speed of hands and feet were witnessed.
We thoroughly enjoyed this show and would highly recommend it.
