I recently received the Revell Vodafone McLaren Mercedes MP4-24 Gift Set which consists of 2x plastic model kits of the Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button Formula 1 racing cars.

Upon opening the box I was faced with the daunting task of putting together not just one model but 2. With over 100 parts and a further 100+ stickers it was going to take a while. Upon writing this review I have managed to complete 1 model which before I started I didn’t think I would so am so proud of myself.

Before you start you will need to find yourself a comfortable chair, have a lot of patience, perseverance and good eyesight as some parts are very small and you will need to read the number for each part.

In the box there are 2 bags of plastic parts (1 for each car) which are all individually numbered, 5 pots of paint, a paint brush, a tub of glue and detailed instructions. You will need some elastic bands to hold parts together when you glue them and a small file for the rough edges.

Once I started following the instructions and building the first model I found that I needed a lot of concentration and patience, some of the parts are very small and fiddly so you have to be very careful and if you have use of a magnifier that would be very helpful. After 3 days I have finally finished my first car (having only used Lego before I was being very cautious as I didn’t want to ruin it). If you have built these types of models before you could probably put it together in a few hours! It has a skill level of 3 but as long as you are patient a beginner would be able to build it. The only thing that doesn’t come with these models is a mini Lewis Hamilton or Jenson Button.

Once complete the car looks great, I do have one sticker slightly out of place but for my first try and days of hard concentrating and patience I am not going to let that distract me and now I have my first out of the way I still have one more to try.

Overall this is a very interesting and enjoyable experience and is a great distraction from the modern world filled with television, computers, game consoles and mobile phones. You need a lot of concentration, patience and time but it was is definitely worth it once you see the completed model

This would make a perfect present for children over 12 or a great Father’s Day gift. As there are 2 models in this gift set maybe father and son could have a good bonding experience building them together. Cheaper than a computer game and the memory will last you longer.
