It’s a great time of year to be asked to review a pair of Lil’ Rascal Kids Hiking socks by Wigwam as we have been busy out and about on woodland walks in our wellies so it was the ideal time to test them on our 4 year old son.

The socks arrived in bright green cardboard packaging which gave lots of details about the features of the socks. The main features being that they are made using merino wool (amongst other materials), will not itch or shrink and will keep feet warm in winter and cool in summer. They also state that they will keep feet dry too. The socks also come with a  2 year guarantee which I have never seen on a pack of socks before, I can’t imagine I would even remember to make a claim if I did have a problem with the socks but it’s good to know they should last well and gives me confidence in the quality of the product.

On first inspection the socks feel lovely and soft, and are very cushioned (our son described them as bouncy when he put them on!) and have a lovely fleecy lining. They are ribbed around the ankle and middle of the foot, and are very stretchy which helps to ensure a good firm fit when being worn.

The socks we were sent were size YL to fit UK shoe sizes 10-3 (28-31 EU). Our son has size 10.5 feet so is on the smaller size of the scale. We found that the heel part of the sock did sit further up his ankle than on the heel as it should have, but he still said they felt comfy and they did seem to fit well despite this. The ribbing on the socks helps to ensure that they have a close fit but aren’t too tight.

Our socks are Navy/Blue stripe coloured but they aren’t brightly coloured as the stripes are flecked with white so are fairly non-descript. I personally feel that this is a negative point as socks designed for children should be brightly coloured to make them appealing. My son actually described them as ‘boring’ and I have to admit I probably wouldn’t find them appealing if I saw them on a shelf in the shop.

But looks aside, when we tested the socks on a wintery walk inside my son’s wellies they were great. The socks stayed in place really well and did not bunch up as tends to be the case with normal socks when wearing wellies. My son said that they were really comfortable and at the end of the walk his feet were lovely and toasty.

We have also washed the socks once following the instructions on the packaging (warm wash inside out with no fabric conditioner) and they look as good as new so I can see no reason why they wouldn’t wash well every time.

I can’t vouch for the whether the socks will keep his feet cool in the summer as we haven’t had a chance to test this but would recommend these socks to anyone who is looking for practical socks for their children for walking/ hiking and they definitely keep feet warm in cold weather. I’m tempted to buy an adult sized pair for myself!
