The Care Bear Digital Pet is a whimsical toy that is a brilliant and perfect Christmas gift for any Care Bears fan or for any fan of digital pets. This small handheld digital toy is a great throwback gift for fans of the original Care Bears and for those who had a digital pet as a child, or for a child who loves to be on a device and wants a pet. This really is a great starter pet to learn about how to look after something else, how to take care of it and how to learn about its needs.
Its small size means that it can be kept in the pocket or bag and does not take up as much room as a real pet. No mess in the house, no having to take it to the vets or buy expensive supplies for it. It really is the best pet to get.
The bright colours of the case, the simple graphics of the display and the interactive game play make it very appealing. The need to take care of such a cute pet, is overwhelming and keeps the player constantly checking that their little pet is ok and well cared for.
The game play is simple and reminiscent of other digital pets of the past. Its slow game play and progression may not be suitable for children/people who are used to a faster paced game. The game play has an interactive pixel display, reminiscent of similar games in the past and is classed as a retro-style screen designed for on the go play.
The game is in the shape of the Care Bear’s head and has a chain attached so can be used as a keyring too. One side is the Care Bear’s face and on the other side is the interactive display, under which there are 4 buttons. Icons appear on the screen, which you scroll through to give the bear the care it needs, this includes feed, sleep, mini games, health and information about your bear, clean, stats, party, read and alerts. Care points are awarded and are shown to tell you how well you are looking after your bear and need to be kept at 100 points for your bear to be happy and healthy. The bear also needs to read a book a day. The game comes with sound effects, such as the bear eating and then burping, but these sound effects are very quiet.
I found the game play fun and the mini games were fun, but I worry that after the initial interactions and the slowness of the progression, it may go the way of my digital pet in the past and slowly be forgotten by myself, especially as I won’t be able to take it to work and make sure it is looked after during the day.
The packaging is also bright and cheerful and makes it appealing to all.
I received the Cheer Bear Care Bear Digital Pet, but you can also get Share Bear, who is purple, Good Luck bear, who is green, Funshine Bear, who is yellow and Grumpy Bear who is blue. Each comes with the Care Bear’s face on one side and the bear’s symbol on the other to help identify which bear you have.
These would make a great Christmas gift and currently retail from £20 and can be found in many retailers, both in the shops and online.
I give this produce 4/5 stars.
