The game arrived very well wrapped up in cellophane and then in a plastic envelope to ensure the game arrived safely and undamaged.
The box makes it clear that this is for older children (age 12 up) and adults only, but it can be played in teams and so can be played from 2 players to 6 teams.
If you want to ensure your children have a good moral grounding – this is NOT the game for you ha ha! This game is all about double-crossing and bluffing. In order to play this game you need to be competitive and you need a poker face.
The game is based upon horse racing, but you need no prior knowledge of horse riding to play. Each player/team gets a horse colour, a certain amount of money with which to bet and some game cards. Someone takes on the role of the bookie and everyone gets a betting slip – do you bet on your own horse or bet on another – bets are made in secret, so no-one knows! All bets are made and the race begins… Who will win? Well who knows? Just as the race looks like there is a clear winner, someone may be able to play a card which sees them falling at the final fence and the race is back on! If you haven’t betted on yourself you may not actually want to win the race and may do all you can to lose! So, as well as trying to get the horse you have bet on to win, rather than yourself, you have to try to disguise what you are trying to do from your fellow horse racers/betters.
Will you choose to let your mother-in-law win and make your wife fall at the final fence? That’s exactly what my husband did – I couldn’t believe it! It did take us a while to play the game again he he! But in all seriousness, this game is great fun and we love it!
Overall, the Really Nasty Horse Racing Game from Rascals is a great family game – but, as the name suggests – it can get nasty, so you soon find out who your friends are!
