In our house we absolutely love playing board games. It is something we do all the time, Sunday night after tea, when we have friends over, when we go on holiday, but especially at Christmas, we just love them. In fact we buy a new game every year especially to play after we have eaten our Christmas dinner
I had not heard of this game prior to playing so it was interesting to have no idea what to expect. The game arrived in a small plastic coated cardboard box. The contents comprise of two decks of really sturdy Quirk cards, and two sets each of mischief cards, steal cards, block cards and stop cards. The way the game works means you can make it easier or more difficult depending on the ages and skill of the players. The game creator recommends the game as being suitable for ages 5 and up and we agree, as long as you can recognise the things on the cards you are good to go. Handily, the 2 decks are split into white and silver edged cards, white for more easy game play, great for younger players and the grey edged set for Quirks which are trickier. You will need between 2 and 6 players and the game will last between 15 and 60 minutes depending on whether you choose the white deck, grey deck, or , mix them all together. This is one of the beauties of Quirk!, it means you can fit a game in to a small window of time, or, play for longer when you have the chance.
Each player starts with 3 cards and the aim of the game is to collect 3 of the same picture cards, known as Quirks. You collect the cards by asking your chosen opponent if they have cards which will help you collect a set, but you can’t just ask, where is the fun in that? You have to act out, mine, impersonate and do your best impression of the images on the cards in the hope that your fellow players can tell what you are up to. You can play with just the quirk cards or you can add the mischief cards to make the game more difficult. They include things like switching completed Quirk sets with other players, and, playing in silence. We found the mischief cards made the game more fun and added a bit of interest.
One of my favourite things about Quirk! Is that it doesn’t matter how young or old you are, there is no need for any prior knowledge, you don’t need to be a great artist or have a tonne of general knowledge. All you need is to not be afraid of looking or sounding a bit silly. Overall we really enjoyed playing Quirk!, we did find when we played it with just 2 players, that it got a little repetitive, however the mischief cards added extra interest to the game play and all in all I would recommend Quirk!. It would make a great gift for family or friends and certainly kept us entertained.
