It’s been 27 years since Pokémon hit our screen and toy shops and with each generation it seems to hold the same enthrallment. The toys become more sophisticated and the play options more varied and this Pokémon Flame & Flight Deluxe Charizard Play Set is a good example of the developing sophistication.

The Pokémon characters from the original series have always been action characters and it’s been a child’s own imagination which propels the figurines into motion, acting out sequences. This play set has a range of movement for the very well known and popular characters Charizard and Pikachu.

Charizard is a dragon like character who is deemed as a special Pokémon with the most potential for damage, this makes Charizard highly valued as a character in the card game, tv series and play figures.

In this set Charizard is a deluxe 15 cm/ 7cm figure with a range of lights, movement and 25 sounds to really ramp up the play value. There’s a different reaction for swooping flight motions, spinning around and other movement and flight actions. And, to further emulate the battle and training strategies of Pokémon this set includes a 5cm/2 inch Pikachu with his very own figure launcher to send him sailing into the air to battle with Charizard.

They’re faithful in appearance to the card and screen characters which is often important to older children.
In keeping with their character profiles Charizard also comes with a triple set of fire projectiles so he can launch a powerful fire attack.

This play set requires 3 x AAA batteries, included, to maximise play and they seemed to last a long time. It’s not a battery draining toy.

Whilst the projectiles don’t go too far I can imagine these will soon be lost as they’re still relatively small. I don’t think it will diminish the play value however. Still worth noting the smaller parts as the age range is suggested for 8+ but I’m certain much younger children will be clamouring for this on their letters to Santa.

The figures are smooth plastic and seem quite sturdy in general with no sharp elements to cause concern so they are robust figures which I think will last, probably until they are outgrown.

The set comes in a cardboard outer package and shaped inner plastic, perfect for the mystery of wrapping paper where it’s impossible to tell what might be inside.

The Pokémon Flame & Flight Deluxe Charizard Play Set is an interactive toy which I think enhances the play value and would be suitable for a child playing alone or with others.

The Pokémon Flame & Flight Deluxe Charizard Play Set is produced by Jazwares, an official affiliate with Pokémon so this is an official product. Despite this and the cost which is usually associated with official merchandise, Smyths seem to have cornered the market for sales somewhat as it’s cheaper there than anywhere else at the time of writing.

Rating: 4.5/5

RRP: £27.99

This is bound to be popular with any young Pokémon fan who has dreamed of a Pokémon battle and the sets are still in stock at Smyths here.
