My older children who are now aged 11 and 8 have always enjoyed Playmobil, but now my little 4 year-old is starting to show a keen interest in playing with our current sets along with his brother, so this review has been perfectly timed.
I was asked to review the Playmobil Police Car with Lights and Sounds, and I honestly think I have been more excited about this than the children. The Police Car is part of the City Action range, which includes Fire Engines, Water Rescue sets and many more should you wish to add to your collection.

The Playmobil box is really exciting, with the various features and the contents on display. It is worth noting that you will need one AAA battery to experience the lights and sounds feature.

The set arrives in a semi-constructed state, as you expect with Playmobil, so there is a little building involved. My 8-year-old appreciated this aspect, whilst the 4 year-old helped but naturally needed a lot of assistance. There are two male Police Officers, complete with hats, guns with holsters and handcuffs. I love the attention to detail as one is wearing sunglasses (we feel he’s the American Cop).  It took around 20 minutes to assembly the vehicle with the wheels, lights and sounds.

The colours and design are fantastic and the attention to detail is amazing. The back roof lifts off easily to reveal 5 seats for the “criminals” to sit in. The back two seats have cute cup holders which I find hilarious in a police van, but these seats also fold down so that your thieves can enter the van via the back doors and climb over the back seats. Alternatively, throw those robbers inside via the super cool side door which springs open. I love the bar effects on the windows; the entire van is just super cool.

The front roof of the van also lifts off to reveal the driving cab with two seats for your Police Officers, a steering-wheel and gear stick. If I were to be picky, there aren’t any seat belts or side doors to enter the van but I think it comes down to making the toy easy for children to play with and keeping the fun details that children enjoy, rather than over-complicating things. It is worth adding that removing and replacing the two sections of the roof is really manageable for children.

There is a hole to the side of the van which I assume is to fill up with petrol should have this accessory, and a tow bar on the back to potentially add a trailer. I love that Playmobil can stand alone or all work together with different sets, and there’s always so much thought put into making this possible.

There are two buttons at the top of the van to activate the lights and sounds, which honestly made my youngest ones’ face just light up and he sprung into Police Car chase mode. It is so realistic, and a perfect finishing touch.

The price-point of £19.99 makes this a great gift from Santa, but equally a suitable gift from an Aunt, Uncle or Grandparent. To a child this would be really good present and exceptional value as I would happily have paid £25. We all know that times are hard financially, so if you are struggling but want to give your child a quality present this is a great option, we loved playing with it.

The recommended age range of 4 to 10 sounds about right, as my 4 year-old has only recently started to show an interest in these toys, and my 8 year-old did enjoy acting out the Police chases.

The only thing that I would suggest to make play a little more fun, is purchasing some extra characters to be the “robbers”. There are several police themed sets at various price points so this is something that is easy to pick up. I have actually ordered the “Thief Figure Set- 70670” which looks fantastic, but it could work with any other branded toys of the same size who can act as the bad guys.

What I love about this brand is first of all the quality as I have never experienced a breakage to date, but also the range of toys; I have found that I can type in a genre or animal that one of my children really loves and Playmobil will usually have a toy related to that theme. It’s a toy for all likes and personalities and a firm favourite in our house. This makes it an ideal and easy Christmas gift idea.

The Playmobil Police Car is a fantastic toy with the attention to detail that you expect from Playmobil, and a great Christmas idea for any vehicle or Emergency Services lover. I would award this toy 5 stars out for 5 for quality, value for money and fun!
