This week I was sent the Epic Cereal Box Creations book by Planet Junko to test out with my two children. It couldn’t have arrived at a better time as it’s school half term holidays again. At the best of times I think all parents can find it difficult to find a way to occupy children over school holidays without relying on screens and video games. But lately between lockdowns and self isolating children seem to have spent more time at home than at school making the school holiday time harder to occupy.

The Planet Junko Epic Cereal Box Creations book is essentially a book of art and craft ideas on how to reuse items from the recycling, such as cereal boxes, to turn them into toys. This seems like a great idea for my son who often rummages through our recycling box to make creations. I like to encourage any STEM activity my children show an interest in as it’s great to get them thinking and being imaginative.

The book itself is very high quality. It’s a spiral bound hardback. The spiral binding makes the pages easy to turn, they stay open on the page you are using and helps stop the book getting torn.

The book has a total of 20 project ideas to follow. What I liked about this book is that the projects are fairly simple. The only items required besides old cereal boxes are scissors, pencils and a ruler. The best part is that the book also contains a box of 30 magic corners. Magic corners hold the cardboard together without the need to use sticky tape or glue. I love that this makes it a lot less messy for younger children and they are able to attempt the projects without too much help.

There are easier challenges such as simple 3D shapes and trickier challenges such as an astronaut helmet making it ideal for younger and older children. I would also say this would appeal to both boys and girls as the ideas range from dolls house furniture to rockets and animals. Each page shows clear step by step instructions with bright helpful pictures showing how to make each toy.

Overall we would recommend the Planet Junko Epic Cereal Box Creations book as it’s perfect for screen free time during school holidays and also as a great hands on STEM learning activity.
