Last evening I was very pleased to be able to go along to see the play ‘Peter Pan Goes Wrong’ at the Theatre Royal in Plymouth.
I took my thirteen year old granddaughter with me and when we arrived before the show it was easy to park in the carpark beside the theatre. It was only a short walk from there to the theatre, where we were greeted by friendly front-of-house staff who directed us to the box office to collect our tickets and programme. The theatre is very bright and modern with a lovely cafe in the foyer – ideal as a meeting place for theatre goers. We quickly located our seats and settled down to await the opening scene. Suddenly several theatre technicians appeared in the auditorium and seemed to be putting finishing touches to the scenery, checking the safety of the lights and seats etc… After a few moments of confusion, everyone realised it was all part of the show and this started the production in a very comical way.
Peter Pan Goes Wrong is basically a play within a play, as the Mischief Theatre Company portray an attempt by Cornley Polytechnic Drama Society to put on a production of Peter Pan. As with any amateur theatre production, anything can happen and it certainly did! So many mishaps occurred – imagine Nana the dog getting stuck in the dog-flap, Tinkerbell nearly getting electrocuted, Peter Pan having numerous flying mishaps and you begin to get an idea of how the production goes! The attempt of the Darling family to fly was hilarious!
It was a very technically challenging show but the talented cast certainly pulled it off. The comedy timing throughout was brilliant and though hard to focus on individuals within the show, the image of a bearded young Michael Darling (played by Cornelius Booth) will remain in my mind for a long while!! Also, I sure everyone could relate to the over-enthusiastic Sandra (played by Leonie Hill) who acted as a very dramatic Wendy – every amateur group has one!
Being involved with a local drama group, my granddaughter found the whole production very funny and knows some of the problems encountered by amateur groups. She is certainly hoping her next production is not so full of mishaps!
Missed cues, broken sets, wrong costumes – what else could go wrong? You’ll have to go along to the Theatre Royal in Plymouth to see for yourselves!!!
A thoroughly enjoyable evening watching a show full of laughs from start to finish.
Well done Mischief Theatre company – I’m certainly looking forward to your next production. A well-deserved five star rating.
