Finding the perfect wine to buy for someone can be tricky. If you are giving it as a gift you obviously want the bottle to look nice but most importantly you want them to enjoy drinking it and this Pinot Noir from Peter Zemmer does not disappoint!

It arrived carefully packaged in a cardboard box so it wouldn’t break. I was slightly disappointed that it didn’t come in a fancy box but that disappointment soon went when I got the bottle out. The bottle is very striking with gold writing and a pattern etched into the glass bottle and oozes sophistication. This bottle definitely screams luxury and based just on the look it is perfect as a Christmas gift! But as I mentioned earlier you also want the wine to taste delicious. This Pinot Noir Riserva Vigna Kofl 2017 is produced by Peter Zemmer at his family owned winery in the German speaking part of Italy – Alto Adige. I wasn’t familiar with this region but it is in the northern part of Italy near the border of Switzerland and Austria.

The wine is made from hand selected grapes from a single vineyard (vigna in Italian) named Kofl (hence the name Vigna Kofl) which lies at 1030 metres above sea level in the foothills of the Dolomite Alps. These de-stemmed grapes are then crushed and fermented for seven days at a temperature of 26- 28oc to extract as much colour and tannins as possible. It is also aged in small French oak barriques for twelve months before being transferred into stainless steel vats to age for another six months. And then finally it is bottled and aged for an additional six months to make sure that the wine is fully integrated! You can definitely tell how much love and care has gone into this wine.

The first thing that hits you when you open the bottle is the smell of rose, cloves and strawberries – it smelt amazing! Then when you pour the wine into the glass you get this gorgeous red colour. I really loved this wine! The taste was of dried fruits and spices and was very easy to drink although you do need to be careful as it is 13.5% ABV!

At £35.45 this is not a wine that you would drink every week but for a special occasion or as a Christmas present then it is definitely worth the price! It has also won the “Two Glasses” award which is one of the most prestigious national wine competitions in Italy and I think it definitely deserves this award!

Peter Zemmer Pinot Noir Reserva, Vigna Kofl, not only looks impressive but it also tastes delicious too and will go down a treat with anyone who loves red wine! They will also have the option of opening it immediately and enjoying it or laying it down for up to ten years. The perfect Christmas gift!
