Papa Johns is an award winning, international pizza chain which has grown in popularity over recent years and is now the fourth largest pizza delivery chain in the United States. With over 450 outlets in the UK, there is probably a Papa Johns in your local town, however as they don’t yet deliver in my area, I must be one of the few people who has never actually had a Papa Johns. To celebrate the launch of the all-new epic film THE BATMAN, I was given the opportunity to review a box of the new limited-edition Black Ghost Chilli Chicken Wings which cost £5.29 and are available to order for a limited time only.

The Black Ghost Chilli Chicken Wings are generously smothered with a fiery red ghost chilli and buffalo sauce. The wings were nice and tender and packed full of flavour, the sauce had a kick to it, but the heat wasn’t overpowering, and the delicious buffalo sauce flavour was present in every mouthful. However, the colour of the sauce is black and at first glance, the wings look burnt and a bit unappealing. I understand this gimmick is in conjunction with the new Batman film, but I think the changing of the colour of the sauce from red to black is unnecessary and maybe slightly off-putting to some. They are delicious but not unique and no different in taste to any other spicy barbecue chicken wings I have had before. I would order them again but would prefer it if they weren’t black.

As well as sampling the chicken wings, I was also able to order a pizza and opted for a half and half. One half of the pizza was double pepperoni and the other cheese and tomato. The large pizza was a generous size and after a portion of chicken wings, could comfortably feed two people. The pepperoni was sliced thinly and was lovely and crisp, the base wasn’t too thick and both halves of the pizza were generously topped with the Papa Johns signature sauce and plenty of cheese. I really enjoyed the pizza; it wasn’t greasy, and each ingredient was well balanced and complimented the other ingredients well. Overall, the pizza was flavoursome, and I would happily order a Papa Johns pizza again.

One thing I never order from a takeaway is a dessert but to ensure I sampled something from each part of the menu, I decided to order a Giant Chocolate Chip Cookie and I’m so glad I did. First up, this cookie is huge and could easily be shared between three or four people. The warm cookie is packed full of chocolate chips and is crispy on the outside and oh so gooey on the inside, in fact, it is one of the best cookies I’ve ever had and luckily for me there is still some left, so I’ll be treating myself to another slice or two tonight.

I thoroughly enjoyed my first ever Papa John’s meal; each item was well cooked and full of flavour, and I would recommend Papa Johns to any chicken wings or pizza lover. They also have a decent vegan menu too, so everyone should be able to find something on the Papa Johns menu to suit their dietary requirements. I will certainly be ordering again.
