There was great excitement in our house to try the Pan-n-Ice, Ice Roll Plate 2 Starter Set. It came beautifully boxed in pastel colours and contained the ice roll plate 2 plus two plastic spatulas so as not to damage the surface of the plate, a set of tongs for lifting the finished items off of the tray and 2 litres of the liquid ice cream mix in vanilla flavour.

The ice roll plate requires to be frozen for 24 hours in a freezer that can go to minus 22 degrees. It needs to be frozen upside down so as the liquid adheres to the metal surface as it freezes, making it colder enough.

When you are ready to make the ice cream rolls, you then take the plate out the freezer while being very careful not to touch the metal surface as it’s very cold! 50ml of the ice cream mix is poured onto the surface and using both spatulas the mixture is broken up and moved around on the plate. When it looks frozen and no longer liquid, you smooth it evenly across the full surface of the plate then using a spatula firmly at a 45 degree angle, make it into rolls. To be perfectly honest it’s not quite as easy as it sounds, but you do definitely get better with practice!

The ice cream itself is very tasty. You can make ice cream rolls of any flavour you like by just adding your own flavourings to the vanilla mix on the tray, avoiding anything too lumpy.

Pan-n-Ice offer a whole range of complete sets as well as the starter pack. These include flavouring and toppings so everything you require is in the box which makes it an ideal gift this Christmas. Options include a coconut based vegan set and a frozen cocktail set. The full range is available at their website www.pan-n-ice.co.uk. The Pan-n-Ice Starter Pack is currently reduced from £71.95 to £54.95. Additional three litre packs of ice cream mix are reduced from £20.95 to £15.95.

The set is probably quite expensive but (with a bit of practise) does what it says on the packet. The single litre cartons of the ice cream mix could do with being reviewed- as you only use 50ml each time with 2 to 3 set of rolls being made per freeze and the carton lasting only 2-3 days once open, most of it got wasted unfortunately due to the time to re freeze the pan between uses. 250ml or 500ml cartons would be much better.

For our large family, the pan really didn’t make enough per freeze but it would be ideal for one or two children.

Pan-n-Ice have two Ice Cream Parlours, one in Westfield Shepherd’s Bush, London and the other in the Trafford Centre, Manchester. Each kit also contains a voucher for an ice cream- unfortunately there are no stores in Scotland!!

They also offer party services with an ice cream cart which will make ice cream rolls for your guests, full details are on their website- www.pan-n-ice.co.uk.
