Palmers Celebration Gin – Strawberry & Rose Review

Reviewed by Cath Joyce

No one can have failed to notice the huge surge in popularity of gin. Every time I am in the supermarket the gin section seems to get bigger with a huge selection of both original and fruity gins displayed on the shelves. I was even in a department store last week and they had a Mother’s Day promotion with a variety of different gins that we were able to sample. I was chatting to the sales assistant and she said it was proving to be a very popular present for Mother’s Day so I am sure there are going to be a lot of happy Mums around the north west on Mother’s Day this year!

Until recently I wasn’t really a fan of gin, I tried it many years ago and wasn’t that keen on the taste so never bothered with it again. I only tried it again a few months ago when I was out with a group of friends who were all drinking gin and raving about it, so I thought I had better see what all the fuss was about! After testing a few different varieties I discovered that it was so much nicer than what I remembered and I really have been converted!

One brand of gin I hadn’t tried before is Palmers so I was quite excited when I heard that I was going to be reviewing the Palmers Celebration strawberry and rose gin.

I had a look at their website and discovered that the Palmers heritage was started in London by William Henry Palmer back in 1805. From humble beginnings as varnish makers the business soon grew under the direction of Walter, William’s son who expanded the alcohol production and paved the way for gin production. The business is still in the family with William’s great grand daughter Angela and her husband sparking the voyage into gin production.

I received a 20cl bottle of the strawberry and rose gin that has a RRP of £15. The bottle is square and looks quite attractive and as it priced at £15 it is a nice size for a gift. Through the clear glass bottle you can see that the gin has a slight pink tinge to it – as you would expect from a strawberry flavoured drink. For those who are interested the gin has a strength of 42%. It is also available in a 70cl bottle. Palmers gin is available to purchase from their website https://www.palmersgin.com

When I took the lid off and smelt the gin I could detect a fruity aroma and decided to try it first in a large gin glass with plenty of ice and standard tonic water, with a couple of slices of strawberries to garnish. It tasted quite sweet and fruity and was very pleasant to drink. It is a real summery drink and I can see myself drinking this on a nice summer day, chatting with friends.

I tried it with a few different tonic waters and found it went nicely with an elderflower tonic and it was also very refreshing when mixed with soda water.

As a newly discovered gin fan I would certainly recommend this gin and if your Mum is a gin drinker then then this should be on your list of gift ideas for Mother’s Day.
