Whilst looking for a hiking boot I must emphasise that I wasn’t looking for something to stride forth in, and complete the Pennine Way or Offa’s Dyke. My intentions were somewhat less ambitious – a good pair of sturdy, economic, boots to potter along some of the country routes near my home in all weathers – maybe calling in for a refreshment or two en-route to counter-balance all the well-intended exercise.
The pair I opted for was the Hi-Tec Mens Waterproof Hiking Boot (in brown) supplied by Shoe Zone.
For the price (£34.99 from Shoe Zone with an rrp of £50) the quality of these boots was much higher than I expected. The thickly treaded synthetic sole is firmly attached to the leather/textile upper with no signs of excess or insufficient adhesive, something I have often seen in shoes within this price band.
The textile lining and synthetic insock were very comfortable, I wore the boots with a thick pair of walking socks – this should be taken into account when deciding your size (I usually chose a size larger than I would normally purchase).
There are five sets of eyelets for the long laces – and I could see that if the laces were to ever to require replacement it would be a very easy task to perform.
My initial walk was a round trip of three miles, and I’m pleased to say, no blistering reported. The country path was very wet and muddy, the boots (not unexpectedly) didn’t leak in any way. At the end of the walk cleaning them was a doddle, I simply washed the mud off with a damp cloth, clearing any excess with a stiff brush.
This particular style is low cut at the rear of the ankle – this is something I prefer as rigid heel support gives me sore ankles – this is not to say that this pair of boots didn’t offer good solid support.
I would highly recommend this boot, and if the quality of this item is reflective of the range offered by Shoe Zone, any others they supply.
