Having a young child there is so much choice of toys and games. Some are education and some have the pure fun element. There is so much choice that it is difficult to know what will be fun and retain the interest of the child and what will be a waste of money.
We were excited to try the The World of Peter Rabbit Fish and Count Game by Orchard Toys. The strap line of the game is have fun learning to count with Peter Rabbit and friends.
The game involves characters from the Beatrix Potter books. It is for 2-4 players and suitable for children 3+. There are some parts such as the game spinner so it really appropriate for younger children. The game is designed to develop counting skills, reinforce number recognition and encourage children to play with others. The box states that the game has been teacher tested.
The box contains 4 character boards, 1 spinner board and 30 fish/beetle cards along with the instruction booklet. The object of the game is that each player takes turns to spin the wheel, the wheel lands on a number and you have to find a beetle card with the same number of beetles as the spinner. Once you have found a card, you turn it over, and count the number of fish on the card. You can then put your fish on your character board. At the end of the game the player with the most fish wins. However, if you pick a beetle card with a stickleback on it, all your fish will get eaten and you have to start again.
The game is engaging for children and it is exciting to see if you have a fish card or a stickleback card. It is a good game for adults to play with children, especially those who are starting out on their counting and number recognition journey. As children get older it would be great for them to play with friends.
The pieces are all pretty robust and are bright and colourful with their favourite Peter Rabbit characters, which also helps with engagement of the game.
Orchard Toys have different games in the the Peter Rabbit range such as Veg Patch Lotto and Don’t Wake Mr McGregor. The Peter Rabbit range is new to Orchard Toys but they have a wide range of educational toys and games for young children.
The Orchard Games website states that Orchard Toys started out around a kitchen table making blocks and stencils for a local nursery school. Now, over 50 years later, we ship to over 50 different countries around the world and are recognised as a leading manufacturer of educational games and puzzles both in the UK and globally.
Orchard Games offer a Free Parts Replacement Service, which allows customers to receive free replacement pieces for their games. They do not charge for this service but as a token of appreciation, they ask for a small donation to their nominated charity East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices. This is great as often game pieces do go missing and if you need extras you can also help Orchard Games charity partner at the same time.
