Last night I was in the audience for the Northern Ballet Company’s production of “Cinderella”. I have seen a few productions by the Northern Ballet Company in the past, so I knew I wouldn’t be disappointed, however I was not prepared for the captivating show that I saw tonight.

The story is set in Set in Imperial Russia, where a beautiful summer’s day turns to tragedy, the story itself  then follows the Cinderella we all probably know but with a few twists and adaptations to freshen it up.

The sets were cleverly designed… look for a giant envelope, I’ll say no more as I don’t want to spoil the surprise and the scene changes flowed well.

I can honestly say I have never seen a ballet where there are circus performers and magic… (forget magical this was real magic) and comedy, this is thanks to the involvement of Richard Pinner the magic consultant and Greentop Circus, circus skills training.

My favourite scene I must admit was “The Crystal Lake” it was truly breath-taking.

The music throughout the production was spectacular, performed by the Northern Ballet Sinfonia (conductor Nathan Fifield and leader Geoffrey Allan).

The fact that the dancers were able to portray their characters through dance alone was marvellous, from the sad, down trodden, yet hopeful Cinderella, (Martha Leebolt) to the spoilt brats of step sisters (Luisa Rocco and Ayami Miyata). The step mother (Jessica Morgan) was fabulous, never before have I wanted to panto style boo someone at a ballet. Each and every dancer on stage tonight deserved the applause they got at the end of the performance.

My 9 year old companion (whose 1st ballet this was) thoroughly enjoyed himself, he particularly  enjoyed the scenes with the magician (Hironao Takahashi).

As with every visit I have had to the Sheffield Lyceum I have been pleased by the friendliness and helpfulness of the staff and the cleanliness of the facilities.

A most enjoyable night and I would highly recommend it to anyone!
