If you like to keep your carbon footprint down, its highly likely to dry your clothes on a traditional outdoor line and not an electric guzzling tumble drier. Plastic use however is not something you would want to add to, especially with standard pegs that degrade and break frequently in the harsh British weather. The alternative is the wooden peg which turns mouldy and, if it’s a two part peg, loses its springs. Neither are particularly satisfactory so I couldn’t wait to try the new NONA recycled ocean plastic pegs.

When the pegs arrived, in a slim cardboard box with no excess packaging, they looked more like a designer paper clip than a peg, in fact, both my husband and son had to read the included instruction leaflet to see what they were. I must admit they are extremely aesthetically pleasing, which did immediately make me wonder if they worked! I received the box of 30 pegs, you can also get 20 or 40 packs, and they were split evenly into two colours, dark green (Kelp Forest Green) and a lighter aquamarine colour (Lagoon Blue), which was a lovely colour contrast in the box. On taking one out of the box it did look like a giant paper clip, about finger length, with no moving parts or springs to break. It’s a plain but stunning design with “nona” imprinted on one side and “made from recycled ocean plastic” on the other.

The first thing I did was have a look at NONA’s website to find out the process of making the pegs. The pegs are made from recycled fishing nets, using the polypropylene maritime ropes for the actual peg and splitting out the netting for other uses. The rope is ground down into a pellet which is injection moulded to make the pegs. This results is a very smooth peg with nothing to snag or catch your clothes on.

Armed with a basket of washing and my NONA pegs I went off to do one of my simple pleasures in life, hanging out the washing. The pegs initially seemed quite tight, so I thought they may struggle going over jeans or towels, but the stretched open easily with no issues. Conversely, I thought some of my thin or silkier materials may slip but these too got a great grip onto the line. It was a windy day so the test was to come back later and see if anything had blown down, a few hours and several string gusts later and everything, including towels, was still hanging firmly.

The pegs are BPA free, and built to withstand exposure to extreme weather and prolonged sunlight, with no moving parts to break or lose they should outlast you. If they don’t you can recycle them at the end of their life. The NONA pegs are not the cheap option at £19.00 for 30 pegs but if they last a lifetime then they are good value.

I can highly recommend this great British manufactured product, its good value, works brilliantly, arrives in 100% Plastic-free packaging, has free postage, and protects the Planet from plastic pollution. There are no downsides so take a look at the website today, read the interesting story and purchase a pack of Planet saving pegs.
