Last night, we were fortunate to be invited to watch the opening night of the Broadway show SpongeBob Square Pants live on stage at Blackpool’s Winter Gardens. The SpongeBob Musical, is adapted from the popular Nickelodeon cartoon that premiered in 1999, if you were a fan then, it will definitely bring back memories.

Immersing us in the enchanting realm beneath the sea, the story revolves around a looming threat to SpongeBob’s hometown of Bikini Bottom from a nearby volcanic mountain that is threatening to erupt and destroy SpongeBob’s hometown. SpongeBob (played by the perfectly cast Lewis Cornay) infusing the character with an abundance of energy and unwavering enthusiasm. With his vibrant yellow hair and aquamarine glasses, he radiates positivity and exuberance, bouncing across the stage with infectious zeal takes centre stage as he tries to prevent the underground volcano from erupting and destroy the home town of Bikini Bottom. SpongeBob, along with his best friend Patrick Star and his squirrel companion Sandy Cheeks, devises a plan to prevent the eruption. However, the villainous Sheldon Plankton payed by DIVINA DE CAMPO has different intentions. The musical also includes satirical elements targeting politics and the media, a subplot involving profiteering from Krabby Patties, and a concert, although these aspects can be easily overlooked. The most well known star of the show Gareth Gates, who became widely recognised in 2002 for becoming runner up on the tv show pop idol, plays Squidward, who comes into his own later in the show showing off his voice and tap dancing skills. The visually stunning set and costume design, which incorporate a vibrant mix of eye catching and vibrantly colourful costumes worn by the characters who all gave a great performance. This kept both our children aged 9 and 13 entertained through out the show. My son could not take his eyes off the stage and was truly mesmerised by the whole show.

One of our favourite standout moments in the show was the electrifying and rhythmic performance of Plankton’s “When The Going Gets Tough.” This energetic number showcases impressive dance moves and features the talented ensemble alongside Plankton and his sidekick Karen. The pounding beats and infectious grooves make it a memorable highlight of the show.

The musical provides a constant stream of fresh and catchy tunes that range from foot-tapping hits to soul-searching ballads. In fact, just a glance at the diverse list of musicians involved in SpongeBob speaks volumes—vibrant, eclectic, and delightfully random. While the musical doesn’t always blend together seamlessly, it’s more like a collage of inspired and melodious fun. Some of the songs include hits by Aerosmith, Cyndi Lauper and John Legend.

The SpongeBob Musical surpassed all expectations and exceeded what anyone thought it could be. While it may not be flawless , it’s an electrifying burst of unadulterated, family-friendly happiness. It stands out as one of the most energetically captivating, visually stunning, and superbly acted original production.

In addition to its entertaining qualities, the show also imparts valuable lessons to children about the significance of friendship, the strength of community, and the courage required to confront challenges. It serves as a reminder that standing together and supporting one another can lead to remarkable achievements, even in the face of adversity. Through its engaging story and vibrant characters, The SpongeBob Musical instils important values that encourage young audiences to value relationships, work as a team, and face obstacles with bravery. I would certainly recommend for a great fun packed enjoyable time with the family.

Rating: I would rate the show 5/5.
