The Theatre Royal in Brighton is an old-fashioned theatre in many ways and puts on many wonderful shows throughout the year as do many other theatres around the country. Where they are different is at Christmas time. Many theatres spend the festive season performing pantomime, however the Theatre Royal has not had a panto for several years now. Instead they put on a show just for children which varies from year to year.
Myself and my 4-year-old son visited the theatre yesterday afternoon to experience this year’s children’s show. I really had no idea what to expect and was really excited when I realised it was not a sit-down show but an interactive mystery solving tour of the theatre!
Nellie is a theatre detective whose job is to solve mysteries within the theatre. On this occasion, Nellie was called in to solve the mystery of the missing oyster. Nellie was played by Florence Leon who was absolutely outstanding and had the children engaged right from the very start. By following the clues and meeting 3 other characters along the way (all played by the very versatile Karl Williams), the children assist in solving the crime and teaching a few morals along the way.
The experience lasts for around 50 minutes and the kids were completely captivated throughout. There is nothing better than watching a young child’s imagination working overtime and seeing the captivation on their faces as well as their verbal contributions which cannot be censored! The children were encouraged to join in all along and really felt as though they were a true detective.
I would thoroughly recommend this to anybody with children aged 6 and under and I promise you will not be disappointed. You will see your child engaged like never before as an assistant detective!
My son said it was amazing and he was so excited when he was given a little gift at the end to take home.
