I was delighted to be asked to review one of Morrisons Takeaway deals. I was sent vouchers to buy one of the meals and a bottle of wine. My husband and I decided to visit our local Morrisons after work on a Friday night, a perfect time for a takeaway we thought as it meant no cooking!

The store was busy but the staff were polite and there was no waiting to be served which was a plus, we decided to have the Chinese Curry and Sweet and Sour meal for 2 which said it included vegetable chew mien, egg fried rice and prawn crackers £7.50, I can find it hard to get meal deals such as this as my husband really dislikes spicy foods and I find I end up with the really spicy main so he can have a milder one so this was perfect as it meant I could actually have what I would normally pick if I were ordering a takeaway from a shop. We picked M Signature Vermentino 75cl – £5.99 to go with our meals, I was impressed with the wine selection in the store and the staff were ready and pleased to help you pick a wine.

I felt the packaging was good, I liked the fact it was fashioned like a carrier bag which is good if you only have this as an item of shopping as it means you don’t need a bag which is a plus for the environment. Each item is in its own carton and packaging and I really liked the fact you can cook the food in the microwave or in the oven, I think it is good to have a choice and it gives you good clear instructions for both. It recommended microwave cooking so we opted for this, I would normally cook in the oven so was eager to see if it would taste the same.

Both the mains could be cooked at the same time which is helpful as there is nothing worse than having one person left waiting to eat, everything is cooked in under five minutes which is pretty impressive and you could really smell the wonderful flavours as it cooked filling the house. We decided to have a glass of wine as we waited, I have never tried any of Morrisons wine so I was unsure what to expect and I don’t normally drink at all but thought I would try it as a treat. The only wine I have had in the past I have found had a really sharp taste I really found off putting but I really enjoyed this wine it was very light and the smell was pleasant, it had a slight marzipan taste which I loved! I also thought the bottle looked very impressive and I would have thought it was a much more expensive wine if I didn’t know the price which would make it ideal as a gift or special occasion.

We both found our meals to be well made and really tasty, normally we would order from a takeaway or make our own and the meal deal really held up against both of these. The Chinese Curry had the right amount of spice, it wasn’t overly hot and I loved the egg fried rice, I have found in ready meals sometimes it doesn’t cook right and it can be hard but this was soft and fluffy, my husband adored his sweet and sour the chicken pieces were big and tasty, he also enjoyed his chow mien. The prawn crackers really added to the meal and were a good size and plenty for both of us to enjoy and the meal was perfect for an evening in front of a DVD, I felt it was a good price for what you got and much cheaper than a takeaway from a shop and took no time to cook. I do love to cook food myself so I would probably only enjoy this as an occasional treat but if I was having a meal with the girls or had family around these meal deals would be ideal and there is plenty to choose from Chinese, Indian and lots of pasta dishes for great value.

My only negative is a small thing but important to me, the fact not all the packaging is recyclable so this could possibly be something they think about when deciding what packaging to use in future.
