We were lucky enough to be selected to review an amazing pantomime production at my royal theatre, The Georgian Theatre Royal in Richmond, North Yorkshire, watching Snow White and her star-studded days auditioning at Hollywood.
I had been told prior to the event that it was a sell-out, as were productions either side of the date I went, which shows how popular productions at the theatre are, not just with the local residents but at last night’s show there were members of the audience who had travelled from as far away as Ripon, but the furthest someone had travelled was New Zealand, so there was no beating that for commitment.
I thoroughly enjoyed the show, and from the reactions from the audience I wasn’t the only one.
Throughout the production, where possible, audience participation was regularly used which added to the enjoyment of the show. The actors adapted lines to responses and requests from the audience. Not a dwarf in sight, we still managed to meet six of her friends, Sleepy, Dashful, Grumpy, to name a few and there was plenty of poisonous apples thrown in for good measure, by that I literally mean the audience participation was taken up a notch and we were able to throw knitted apples onto the stage to confuse the brilliant dynamic wicked witch, Norma Desmondemona.
The Dame (Orsenia Wells) was his usual brilliant self and gave a marvelous performance, relying on good banter and a mastery of the role to ad lib ad hoc; some witty jokes just for adults but mainly pure clean fun for the whole family.
All the cast gave their best and one can’t fault the crew behind such a well-presented performance. The cast was led by regular Georgian Theatre Royal performers, Gary Bridgens (Orsenia Wells), Emily Essery (Snow White), Penny McDonald (Norma Desmondemona) and James McLean (Douglas Fairpants) as well as local lad Billy Gaines (Rudolph Valentine/Mirror).
Stunning from start to finish without too many dreary songs and some fun upbeat music.
To quote my 10 year old, “The costumes were great, the props were amazing, the acting was fabulous and the comedy was super funny, really enjoyed it!”
