Micky’s Magic Pencil by Vivian French Review

Reviewed by Nicola Mccallum

Micky’s Magic Pencil is a delightful tale about Micky who has a magic pencil. It is Red, Yellow Blue and Green and when it is used amazing things happen. The story follows the children in Micky’s class and his friends. Micky will loan out his pencil out to friends and when they use the pencil it helps the child achieve something they think they can’t do when really they can.

The front cover is well illustrated and it caught the eye of my 6 year old who instantly asked “What does the pencil do that makes it magic” which resulted in us having to read the book straight away so we could find out. As a parent I have found it difficult to gauge some children’s books to the level of my child. The front cover clearly states Early Reader on the front but what was really helpful was the description explaining that blue early readers were perfect for sharing and reading together and a red is the next step in the reading journey. Micky’s Magic Pencil is a red Early Reader.

Micky’s Magic Pencil is a chapter book which is nicely split up into manageable reading sections for the reader. Each page is also well illustrated which helped to engage my son further with the story. While it is a book for children to read on their own it is also suitable as a story to be read together. As my son was so desperate to read this book we read it together first and then over the next couple of nights he attempted to read this story on his own.

A story about friendship and kindness that is very gender neutral this book has already proved popular with my 6 year old boy. The story is very well written and has a good text to picture ratio that the length of the story was not off putting for young readers.

Priced at £4.99 this book is good value for money and is one that will be passed down to my younger children to enjoy that is if I can pry it out of my son’s hands.

Overall I give this book 5 out of 5 as I cannot find any faults with this well written, beautifully illustrated children’s book.
