Yesterday we visited the Theatre Royal in Plymouth to see Mice on Skates. There is a large car park situated just behind the theatre, with ample parking for a reasonable price. The Theatre Royal is a well presented modern theatre in the city centre. It is dark on the outside however light and airy with lots of open space on the inside. It is clean and tidy, and well-presented throughout.
There is a quiet/calm atmosphere as you enter the building however it is not without a buzz; the further you go in the more activity there is, especially as you get to the main foyer where the box office and a small cafe area are situated.
The box office staff were very helpful in locating our tickets (despite a slight hiccup in figuring out where they were stored!), and the theatre staff helpfully directed us to our seats; the only small issue was that the seats were not fully labelled meaning we were in the right row but the wrong seats to start with, but we soon sorted that out ourselves. The cafe staff were welcoming and prompt.
Mice on Skates is a children’s show with only 2 actors and a selection of multi-use props and puppets. It is a simple but fun and engaging idea; 2 mice go on their travels through Europe, on skates, to discover lots of new cheese. There is acting, slapstick, comedy, singing, lots of puppetry and interaction with the audience. There are even elements for the adults to enjoy! The mice eventually realise that it is nice to be home, and all their friends have also learnt to skate whilst they were away.
We found the show to be very engaging for children – the simple idea with minimal activity going on stage, except the 2 actors and their props, meant there was little to distract the children away from the story. The show would suit children from age 3 up to 8 and maybe older. The actors were funny and energetic, keeping the buzz of the story going. We all enjoyed it very much. The actors came out afterwards and let the children play with the puppets, which was a nice touch.
We were overall very satisfied and pleased that we’d been to see the show. The theatre is split up into smaller sub-theatres, and the one we were in “The Drum” was quite an intimate space – this was ideal for this type of show.
We would absolutely recommend the show to others with young children.
Tickets cost £8.70 (includes 70p booking fee).
