I have a teenage daughter who is now 16 and twin sons who are 9.  I have been a fan of Melissa and Doug products for a good few years now.    My twins, or ‘twinkles’ as I tend to call them, had their 9th birthday in summer and I wanted to make it extra special for them this year.    I was therefore delighted when I heard I was able to review this product.

I do try to encourage my children to have a wide variety of interests and music is something that is so important in my view.   Music can bring so much joy to our lives and playing musical instruments can, in my opinion, bring such a sense of achievement to children.

The playset arrived quickly in an exciting looking box with minimal packaging but in perfect condition.  We couldn’t wait to get started.  By that I mean that I actually played with these instruments with no children in sight on one occasion.  The set contains the following:

  • Guiro and scraper
  • Castanets
  • Kazoo
  • Triangle and mallet
  • Tambourine
  • Instructions
  • Songbook
  • Handy tote bag

The set is suitable for age 3+.  One of the first things that struck me was how well made the instruments are and how exciting they look.  I think the colours work well together and the design has been kept simple and therefore not too busy looking.   I love the colour choice made for the wooden castanets of orange and yellow.  They look so fun and striking.  The triangle and mallet are both very robust and shiny silver in colour.  The guiro is made from wood and has vibrant blue at one end and vibrant orange at the other end. It has grooves running throughout making it easy to grip.   The kazoo too is another of the instruments which has been made from wood.   Its main colour is a natural wood one but it does have a lovely pattern on it in vibrant green and orange.  The tambourine is partly made of wood.   It has a lovely Let’s Explore design on it in brown, orange, yellow and green. It has a handy hole which is the perfect size for little fingers.  The tote bag is mainly beige in colour with a green trim and design.

I think that this playset encourages motor skills, problem solving and a lot of creativity.   The songbook doesn’t have a massive range of songs in it but the ones included are great – A-camping we will go, Old Macdonalds Campfire and Bingo. They have fun lyrics.

One of my twins in particular is really taken with this music playset.  He loved trying out the various songs in the songbook.  I love the fact that this playset can be used for independent play but also for a family to play together.  The instructions were really easy to follow.

I am not a big fan of really noisy toys, so was delighted to find out when trying the instruments that non are what I would consider to be too noisy.

I would recommend this Melissa and Doug product to others and Melissa and Doug as a whole.  I have been lucky enough to own several Melissa and Doug products over the years, whether purchased or kindly gifted to review.

I think that this toy would make a fantastic Birthday, ‘Just because’ or Christmas gift idea.  I think that the RRP represents excellent value due to the quality of the product and the good range of instruments included. I absolutely love that the product is so portable.  i think that it could easily been taken away on a camping trip or other short break.
