Have you ever fancied attending a murder mystery night? There are a whole range of adult orientated games out on the market which you can play at home. Medical Mysteries New York Emergency Room is a twist on a murder mystery, you have to save your patients!

This is a game aimed at age 14+ years and for one to four players. I would most certainly agree to the age, as it takes some following to understand the game in itself, so unless you have a budding doctor in your midst, this is definitely not for your younger children. We actually played the game with five adults, and my personal opinion would be it’s a two player game, which is where we ended up. It was easier to follow the game with two of us, but that was just us.

We hadn’t been drinking, but I would suggest it’s the game you play first on a games evening with family or friends as adults, as you really do have to work hard to follow what path the game takes you down. The premise is you have to examine the patient, diagnose the problem and then treat them. You really don’t need a medical background to play, but if I had any health care professional friends, I would most certainly have them on my team, the idea is you all work together to get a positive outcome.

There are four scenarios in the box, the end game for all four is to save the life of your patient and help them survive the night, there is an easy set, two medium and one hard. There are four patient envelopes each containing electronic medical record, intake interview, story cards, status cards, patient form and epilogue, along with two envelopes with tutorial (patient sample) rules of the game, research sheets with all medical information, action you need to play the game and result code booklet. We played the easy scenario first and the game took around an hour. I think once you become familiar with the results codes, you might get a little quicker at some parts of the game. It was a mixed result from our family, some felt it was over their heads and far too much for a Saturday evenings fun, however I enjoyed it. This is something completely different to those age old games we all know and love, it does get your brain thinking, and that’s no bad thing as you get older!

I think if you played the game with different people over a period time you would get plenty of play from the games, as each outcome would depend on decisions made along the way by the team of players. As games go, it’s different, it’s interesting and provokes discussion. Beats a game of dominoes or snap! It will most definitely give you a few hours of brainstorming and satisfaction if you saved your patient, as we did, of course!
