Mckennas at Northern Stage Review

Well tonight I am extremely pleased to say I have discovered Newcastle’s hidden gem! This may be the nicest place I have eaten in Newcastle and all for a completely reasonable price. Where is this hidden wonder…? Well it is none other than Mckennas at Northern Stage!

Slightly off the beaten track this restaurant is among the hussle and bussle of the student area in Newcastle and located inside the Northern Stage. This is about a 5-10 minute walk away from the nearest car park, it is accessible for wheelchairs but worth bearing in mind the extra walk time if you’re not so nimble on your feet.

Once inside the restaurant you are greeted by a host of friendly staff all wanting to bend over backwards to help you. The tables are spacious and you never feel like you are crammed together, as can happen in some restaurants. The decor is modern with fantastic lighting throughout, perfect for looking out at the lovely surroundings. The toilets are also disabled friendly, well kept and plenty of them.

The selection of wine, on tap beers and spirits is also worth a mention – we were well and truly spoiled for choice with the selection.

The 3 course bistro menu was tasted tonight by myself and my friend and what a fantastic menu! To start I had Parma Ham with melon and white truffle oil, this was a lovely combination and well presented. My friend had Beef Carpaccio with parmesan and rocket – again beautifully presented and of high quality.

MckennasFoodFor my main I had sea bass on a bed of olive potatoes with rocket. The portion size was fantastic 2 large servings of perfectly cooked sea bass, honestly the best sea bass I have had in a restaurant! My friend had cod and chips, this came with homemade tartar sauce, another well sized main.

For desert a chocolate mousse with popping candy! Really creamy and lovely quirky touch with the candy, I had the lemon posett which was served with strawberry and blueberry’s the perfect finish to the perfect meal!

I would highly recommend this restaurant! Do not wait until you go to the theatre to try… Mckennas is well worth the visit at any time for wholesome, locally sourced food.
