Matador Freerain24 Backpack Review

Reviewed by David Savage

On receiving the Matador Freerain24 for review, on first glance I wasn’t sure what it was. My immediate thought was that it was a pac-a-mac as it was a small drawstring bag! It is actually a 24 litre waterproof pack-away daypack/backpack!

So on receiving this bag, it came in a small drawstring pouch that fits into the palm of your hand and only weighs 5.5oz. On taking the backpack out of the bag it unfolds to a full size, waterproof backpack leaving the drawstring pouch attached to the backpack so that you don’t loose it.

So is it any good?

Well it is very lightweight at 5.5oz so is very thin. Despite the thinness of the material it is very strong and made of CORDURA®, which is a durable synthetic material which is resistant to punctures and tears. It also has a HYPALON® rolltop construction to close the bag making it waterproof. It has 2 vented, breathable straps that when wearing are very comfortable. The straps are thin with no padding. All the seams are sealed to make sure the bag is waterproof, protecting the contents.

As already mention, the backpack has a large 24 litre capacity. It also has 2 open side pockets for water bottles etc. and a zippered pocket on the front.

Closing the bag is very simple, you just roll down the top at least 3 times and fasten closed with the attached clips.

So with the good old British weather and never knowing if it is going to rain it is very handy to stick in my pocket when going out. As I don’t want to carry a normal empty backpack around, this compact size of the Freerain24 means I can put it in my pocket and off I go.

So on a rainy day I decided to pop to the supermarket. I took the backpack in its compact size and went shopping. Once I finished getting the bits I needed I removed the backpack from its pouch and put in my shopping, which easily fit with lots of room left over. On returning home the entire contents of the bag were dry.

This is a great lightweight compact backpack with lots of space for everything you need, from shopping to trips out. Being waterproof ensures that your belongings always stay dry. And when not in use it folds up into its own pouch so takes up very little storage space in a draw or cupboard. It is strong, durable and excellent quality and should last a very long time.

My only slight niggle, although is not with the backpack itself, was the lack of instructions on how to fold up properly to put away back into the pouch. But I soon figured out a way that worked.

Whether you need a backpack for general use, shopping, day trips or even hiking the Matador Freerain24 Backpack is perfect.
