Edinburgh Playhouse was up on its feet and rocking in the aisles to the music of The Beatles in Let It Be last night. Let It Be, A Celebration of the Music of The Beatles, is running from the 18th until the 23rd April 2016 in Edinburgh before continuing on its UK tour.

The show is a collection of many of The Beatles hits and follows the progression of their style. The show opens in The Cavern Club in Liverpool where the band first made a name for themselves in the early 1960’s. The scene is set using the lighting to create the arches. It then moves through their performances in The Royal Variety Performance and the Shea Stadium, New York where they played as part of their 1965 US tour. It continues through the songs they recorded in the studio until the band parted ways in 1970.

Paul, Ian Garcia, John Brosman, Luke Roberts starred as the famous four, assisted by Michael Bramwell on the keyboard. They bore a passing resemblance to John, Paul, George and Ringo and the costumes of the day certainly helped. The audience, many of whom were reliving their youth, entered into the spirit of the performance being encouraged to sing, dance and clap along and even take photo to put on social media!

The show flowed by using the two television screens running clips and close up shots allowing set and costume changes. I loved the staging of the second act with the use of iconic and retro graphics and images on the back-drop of the stage.

I could start to name The Beatles hits in the show but I would be here for a while! I am sure there can’t be many that are not in the show!

Edinburgh Playhouse in located at the East end of Princess Street in Greenside Place and is a short walk from Waverley Train Station and The Omni Centre multi storey car park.
