Yesterday afternoon (Saturday) I attended the 1.30pm performance of ‘LazyTown’ with my two year old nephew at the New Wimbledon Theatre. With a small cast of 6, using only the main characters from the extremely popular TV show, Sportacus, Stephanie, Ziggy and Robbie Rotten.
The performance is set in the fictional world of ‘LazyTown’. The storyline follows Stephanie, Ziggy and Sportacus in their venture to make ‘LazyTown’ the most energetic town in the world. In order to win such a prestigious title, the three must fill the energy meter (displayed on a TV screen centre stage throughout the performance) by being as active as they can, this includes singing, dancing, games and playing sport. However they must fill the energy meter before the timer runs out and of course at every step, like any good villain, Rotten Robbie is there to hinder their progress as he strives to keep LazyTown the laziest town ever!
The performance involved plenty of audience participation in dancing and even some in the sports and games segments. Before attending, I was sceptical whether the performance would be a little too old for the two year old who attended with me, however even though in some aspects it was a little out of his age range, he very much enjoyed the singalongs and all the dancing that went with it! The age range for the production probably should start at around 3 years old in hindsight. ‘LazyTown Live’ sticks closely to the original TV shows and uses many of the original tracks as well. It is amazingly captivating (even for those aged over 10) and promotes a wonderful image of health and exercise that the cast succeed in making exciting. The costumes were bright as well as sporty and there was something for every child from bright pink hair and a pink dress to a blue super hero suit! The talent of the cast cannot be over looked either, the gymnastics performed were fantastic and the singing talent was extremely impressive. Especially that of Stephanie.
The New Wimbledon Theatre was lovely, very small but all the charm and ornate interior of the old London theatres. Parking was extremely easy as the theatre has a car park placed directly outside. Its location is perfect for public transport also.
Overall it was an extremely enjoyable afternoon attending the performance. All of the kids in the audience got involved and the cast were so convincing it was difficult not to be lured in myself! It’s a wonderful way to entertain your children and promote a good life lesson. For kids aged 3 to 103 (as they say in LazyTown) I would highly recommend paying the New Wimbledon Theatre a visit or seeing LazyTown live on tour at a theatre near you!
