One of my most favourite things to do is to lay down on the sofa with a good book. It doesn’t matter if I’m absorbed in a late-night psychological thriller, a spine-chilling horror or a murder-mystery, there are two other things required to accompany the book – a hot cup of tea and good lighting. Good lighting should never be considered a luxury, it’s essential and a reader’s best friend. Good lightning can transform the reading experience. With it coming up to Father’s Day (15 June, in case you have forgotten), you might be looking for the perfect gift, something practical yet personal, and I think that I have found it! The Paulmann Jerik Reading Light with USB Charger! What more could the reader in your family want but good lighting and a place to charge a phone. The Paulmann Jerik Reading Light is a sleek wall light that blends style, functionality and a touch of tech in one smart package.

The Jerik wall light from Paulmann has a minimalist design featuring a swivel light for focused illumination, with 3 adjustable brightness settings, it features a USB-C port (5V/2A) for charging eReaders or fast-charging phones and a storage shelf to place a phone/eReader on while charging. It is available in 2 colour options: black matte or matt white. It emits a warm white glow at 3000K, creating a cosy ambiance that’s easy on the eyes during extended reading sessions. It is fitted with a braided fabric 1.2m power cord (fitted with a Euro plug).

The first thing I noticed when taking this light out of the box was the weight, it is quite heavy –  and it feels solid, durable and good quality. Then I noticed the size, it measures approximately 13cm(H)x18cm(W)x9cm(D) and is a very good size for placing the largest of phones on the shelf or eReaders – a perfect safe and secure place to charge them. It also comes with screws and rawl plugs for fixing it to the wall.

Once fixed to the wall (which is very easy to do, the back plate unscrews and screws to the wall, and then the light is screwed back on to the plate), it looks very aesthetically pleasing and I love the minimalistic look and adjustable light. The swivelling light head allows users to focus the light exactly where it’s needed, ideal for reading without disturbing a partner. It would be equally great in a living room, study or bedroom.

Using the light is simple. It features a small indiscreet button which you press and hold to turn on/off. It features 3 different brightness levels which can be cycled through with a press of the power button. On its brightest level it is extremely bright and the lowest level is nice and soft without being too dim.

 What makes the Jerik stand out isn’t just its sleek design or soft adjustable lighting is that it features and integrated USB-C charging port. By plugging in a USB-C cable users can charge their phones, eReaders or even wireless earbuds with ease. It’s a clever feature that elevates this fixture from standard wall light to a smart living essential.

Overall, the Jerik is an excellent wall light. Boasting a charging facility and a 3-step dimming function it is a perfect wall and lighting accessory. With Father’s Day approaching it would make an excellent gift for that special someone who likes to sit down and relax reading a good book or newspaper etc. Adjusting the brightness is simple and smooth. And the quality of light is excellent.

I love the swivel light head that allows the focus of the light to be directed exactly where needed.

While I love this light, there are some small negatives – the cable length is only 1.2m, I feel this could do with being slightly longer as I have the light about halfway up the wall and it just reached my plug sockets, although if putting next to the bed for bedtime reading it would probably be a good length (obviously depending on where your sockets are). The next small negative is that it is fitted with a 2-pin Euro plug so you will need a adapter to use it (one is not supplied). And finally, the bulb isn’t changeable, so if it were to go the whole unit needs replacing – that said, it is an LED bulb that has a 30000 hours lifetime (about 3.5 years if left on 24/7).

With a price tag of £147, the Jerik is certainly a considered purchase, but I feel that overall it is worth the outlay. With its combination of style, reading comfort, and USB charging facility it an ideal gift for discerning book lovers – especially those who appreciate quality over gimmicks.

When it comes to Father’s Day gifts, a space that is flooded with novelty socks and hastily chosen mugs, why not give a gift that adds lasting comfort to everyday life? The Jerik USB-C Reading Light isn’t just a lamp – it’s a bright idea for Father’s Day and beyond, one that will last a long time and be much appreciated (it even comes with a 5 year warranty).

An excellent aesthetically pleasing and high-quality wall light with some good features. For the price tag I would have liked to see a slightly longer power cord with a 3-pin UK plug fitted (or at least supplied with an adapter), but that doesn’t takeaway from the quality and ease of use.

I installed mine on the living room wall next to the sofa where I do most of my reading, but it would ideally be suited next to the bed for bedtime reading.
