Ladybird Classics Peter Pan Review

Reviewed by Linda Curtain

As soon as I opened the parcel containing this classic book – Peter Pan – to review, I was impressed with the great quality of the book. It has a really hardwearing, wipeable cover with a beautiful illustration of Peter Pan on the front.

This book is a retold version of the ever popular story of Peter Pan – written by J.M.Barrie – which surprisingly started life as a stage play in 1904 and was turned into the novel we all love seven years later.

When I saw the lovely illustrations and easily readable text, I decided to share this book as a story-time session with a group of special needs children I work with. Well – they loved it! The story was easy to follow and the detailed illustrations added so much interest. The text was very descriptive throughout and the section about the lost boys and Neverland really held their attention – although some were a bit scared of the evil Captain Hook! Everyone was very sad when Wendy got shot by Tinkerbell and a lot of booing ensued – soon to be replaced by cheering when Wendy became mother to the lost boys!

This is certainly a great book to share with a group of children or as a bedtime story – the compact size of the book makes it easy to read and display. The ribbon bookmark is a lovely extra not often seen in books.

This story – which has been abridged and retold by Joan Collins and so beautifully illustrated by Annie Wilkinson – keeps all the original elements of the story with some added bits like the reference to the Peter Pan statue in Kensington Gardens and brings a classic story back to life to be enjoyed by another generation.

I am certainly looking forward to reading and sharing other books in this series and give the book a 5 star rating.
