La Fille Mal Gardee at the Theatre Royal Plymouth Review

11-13 October 2018

First of all, I just want to say wow! An absolutely outstanding production, that all involved should be incredibly proud of.

At the beginning of each of the three acts, there was a moment of just setting with the beautiful music from the live orchestra – helping to set the scene and it truly enhanced the experience for me and allowed me to fully appreciate an aspect of ballet which often gets pushed aside for the image of the dancers.

The settings were outstanding and rich with detail, expertly containing aspects of French culture in a very simplistic, rustic way, with absolutely zero clichés.

There were many aspects of comedy throughout the ballet, which is something that many lack, and this was done extremely tastefully – often through the farm chickens and the mother, and later on through the rich boy. The relationships presented on stage were enthralling and emotionally captivating – the forbidden love of the daughter and the poor farm boy from her mother, the loving relationship between mother and daughter, and the combination of relationships within the community.

The story that was performed was done so expertly and with ease. Those performing on Thursday 11th October at Theatre Royal Plymouth had extremely precise facial expressions and looked as though they were genuinely enjoying their time on stage. The leading duo were full of love and this hugely captivated the whole audience and at times felt extremely emotional for all present.

I cannot recommend this production enough, and if I could give it more than 5 stars, I would in a heartbeat.

Thank you to all those involved with La Fille Mal Gardee, for reminding us all what young, true love and happiness feels like.
