Having my second child recently means that we have a better idea of which items are really necessary. Feeding and teeth brushing are certainly two major parts of raising any baby and therefore finding the best accessories for these is crucial.

Bottles are a large part of many families feeding journeys, whether exclusively using expressed milk, formula or a combination. For me there are many features of the bottles which are important, which can make choosing the right one for you and your baby actually quite hard. MAM have designed their ‘Easy start Anti-Colic bottles’ to try and cover all the basics. I was sent their pack of two 260ml (90ml) bottles designed to be used from 2 months plus. They have smaller bottles as options from newborn. These particular bottles are available in four different designs, I was sent the matt linen which is gender neutral and features a forest and fox design. Pink and blue options are also available and for me the designs find the right balance between cute and stylish, allowing them to be attractive to babies and parents alike.

Moving between breast and bottle feeding means the teat is important. Designed to be flat and soft like the mother’s nipple, they are claimed to be ideal for combi feeding which is great. I personally found no issue moving between breast and bottle using these and also have previously used the smaller version when my baby was a newborn. The well known MAM bottle shape itself is one of my favourites as it is easy and comfortable to hold. The vented base ensures a smooth flow of the milk and reduces bubbles which is the brands ‘anti- colic’ method and seems to be effective. Neither of my babies particularly struggled with wind so I cannot comment on the level of effectiveness for a baby with colic however. The set comes with size 2 teats (slow flow), however other sizes can be purchased and used instead if your baby prefers a faster flow.

Clear volume markings allow ease of use and the sections of the bottle are easy to remove and reattach. The sections are all easy to clean and the bottle itself is cleverly designed to be self sterilising by adding water and heating in the microwave for 3 minutes. A great feature to be used on the go! It wasn’t clear if the time (3 minutes) for the self-sterilising option would need to be modified to enable both bottles to be sterilised at once. The bottles are also a good shape and size to enable them to fit in most sterilisers from Milton containers, microwaveable bags or steam or UV light options so multiple can be sterilised at once.

We were also sent the ‘MAM Learn to Brush’ set of two toothbrushes which is perfect timing for the addition of some teeth for baby number two! This two step leaning set provides the equipment (two toothbrushes) required for parents to train and demonstrate how to brush and for the baby to have ago themselves. A handy safety shield, which can be moved between either brush, prevents the toothbrush going too far towards the back of the mouth and causing any gagging. I have not seen this safety shield feature before and it was certainly effective in preventing my baby from pushing the brush too far back in these early stages. Both bushes are very similar however the child brush is smaller in length and has a slightly larger surface area of brush. The longer length of the training brush allows both parent and child to hold the handle and brush together. Both have another feature I have not seen before- the toothpaste indicator, to demonstrate clearly how much toothpaste is required. I love this idea as it allows your child to have a visual marker to help them gauge this themselves. The brush design is neat, with a softer but less slippery handle and indents to make them easy to hold. My baby had no difficulty gripping the brush. The design also features a cute teddy bear face making the brush appealing and friendly looking which is great when introducing a new item to your baby. The brush set comes in three colour options, white and either; blue, yellow or pink. The shades are nice and the simple colour palate assists with a hygienic looking product. A bit more expensive that a basic toothbrush however I think the features, especially the safety shield, mean this set is worth the extra money for your child’s first toothbrush. They are recommended for 5 months plus which fits in with when most children start to get their first teeth.

I would recommend both of these items to parents and can honestly say that the MAM bottles have always been one of my favourites.
