The ballroom dance sensation ‘Keep Dancing’ is touring the UK and has just arrived at the New Alexandra Theatre in Birmingham. Starring Robin Windsor and Anya Garnis, with celebrity guest Louis Smith, we were entertained to a medley of dances and musical performances which thrilled from start to finish.
Three vocalists sang a mix of songs from different genre including ‘You should be dancing’ and ‘I put a spell on you’. They interacted well with the glamorous dancers, who demonstrated a variety of styles with energy and elegance. The glitzy costumes were as sparkling and spectacular as you would expect, and the simple staging complemented the performers well.
Anya and Robin were the stars of the show, dazzling the audience with seductive waltzes and sexy sambas. Robin got a loud cheer when he first came out wearing tight trousers, with his bare chest revealed. Anya’s turns were mesmerising and both dancers showed off their strength with elaborate moves and lifts.
Louis Smith did a superb job recreating the kicks and flicks of the Charleston which contributed to him winning the Strictly Come Dancing final in 2012. The energy from all the performers was impressive considering the length of the show. Robin in particular was very flirty with the audience and there were lots of uptempo tunes which created a great atmosphere. Lots of people stood up to dance during the finale and it was obvious that the show was a hit with the mixed demographic in the theatre.
The New Alexandra Theatre is in a central location in the city and has plenty of parking nearby. We were welcomed into the bar before the show, which is a beautiful room to relax with a drink and chat to friends. The staff were very friendly and it is possible to pre-order refreshments for the interval using a handy phone app.
I would give this entertaining show a 5/5 rating.
