The Jersey Boys was a show I was keen to see and had high expectations of simply due to what I had heard about it in passing. I think it’s fair to say that it’s generally highly thought of and is a popular show so I wanted to see if it really could live up to the hype.
We saw the show at Milton Keynes Theatre which we hadn’t visited before. Researching it online first, I found the website which offers a range of detailed information including sections on finding the venue as well as information for disabled access/hard of hearing etc…
We followed directions to the theatre that we had found on the website and these took us perfectly to the our destination where we parked easily in the theatres adjoining multi storey car park which offered ample parking that is very cheap after 6pm. Milton Keynes Theatre is a very large modern auditorium boasting a massive 1400 seats. We were seated in the circle at the end of a row and yet still had a very good view of the stage.
The Jersey Boys portrays the lives of the four original members of The Four Seasons. Each character cleverly gets his turn to share his story which are all brilliantly woven with their wonderful music. I’m a child of the eighties and not overly familiar with The Four Season’s however, I knew every song that was played and to me, it sounded exactly how I’d grown up listening to them at home! I’d gone expecting a musical and it certainly is that and yet the powerfully portrayed story was every bit as important and even emotional.
From the moment the show started, it was non-stop and impressive throughout! The modern set boasted a screen showing both on stage and past real life footage. Props and backgrounds rapidly changed almost without you noticing. The story of their struggle to the top was a gripping tale and got you engaged in each member of the band, their story is funny, heart-warming and at points quite a sad tale!
The live band was fantastic and made an appearance for the finale. This was fantastic and an encore meant that the entire cast came back on for one more number!
The Jersey Boys was an utterly fantastic experience which totally lived up to its west end reputation!
