Now, here’s what lovely Beth Thomas of Unbound Mind ADHD Life Coaching & Neuroinclusive Link Ltd had to say…
How and when did your business start?
My coaching business started a couple of years ago through the realisation of my own adult neurodivergent diagnoses and noticing that there is such a lack of adequate support for neurodivergent people. I decided to pursue a coaching path to blend my lived experience together with professionally developed skills to help others make sense of their brains and find ways to live authentically and aligned with their values.
What have been your biggest business challenges?
There have been so many! Developing your own business as a neurodivergent person is not easy by any means. Some of my biggest business challenges include learning how to delegate and when it’s important to do so, how to build efficient systems that work with my brain and a classic ADHD challenge of maintaining consistency. These are just a few challenges I’ve encountered over the years so far and I anticipate many more to come on the journey! It’s part of the process.
What advice would you give to anyone thinking of starting a business?
Be gentle & compassionate with yourself, have firm boundaries, learn how to delegate and work in a strengths aligned capacity to leverage your highest skills. Build a support network, lean into it. Embrace the failures, there will be many and if you factor them in as an inevitable part of the journey towards success it’ll be a lot less painful & overwhelming when they do happen! This is where the self-compassion is particularly poignant. Schedule non-negotiable rest time before your body schedules it for you. Your business will be a reflection of what you invest into it, so invest health, patience, trust, belief & love as well as the time & funds for the best chance at flourishing both in and out of the business.
What do you like best about being in Maddy Alexander-Grout’s Invisible To Influential membership?
The raw honesty & accountability from everyone! It keeps me feeling motivated on the days I don’t feel like showing up.
What tips would you give to any business owners who are struggling with overwhelm?
Overwhelm shuts down your pre-frontal cortex which is where lots of important things including your executive functions are stored. If you are trying to ‘push through’ overwhelm and expect productivity- that would be the same as trying to get a car to start without a battery.
Find check-in & regulation exercises that work for you and practice them so they become natural, when you recognise the personal signs of overwhelm creep in, stop and check in with yourself. Practice regulation exercises until the overwhelm becomes manageable then reassess whether you are ready to continue the task.
Have there been any recent wins that you would like to tell us about?
So many! My clients achieve the most incredibly transformations it really is a beautiful privilege to hold that space for them. I’ve had clients deconstruct their limiting beliefs and be able to say things like ‘for the first time in 10+ years I feel hopeful about the future and proud of myself’. I’ve secured thousands of funding for many clients via Access to Work just to name a couple!
Is there anything exciting coming up that you would like to tell us about?
Always! I’m super excited about expanding my services in 2025 to offer a range of different types of support that will hopefully make access to services better for all economic backgrounds & circumstances, so keep your eyes out on my website for updates!
Which activities do you enjoy doing in your leisure time?
I love being outside with my dog and most things that involve movement. Being out in forests or dancing are probably my all time favourites! I’m currently trying to learn how to crochet too! But I’ll definitely stick with my day job for now!
