Finally the British summer arrived and with it the array of flying critters desperate to join you on your seasonal adventures. Being offered the chance to review the Insect-O-Cutor Nomad was a boon as the hot weather arrived.
Insect-O-Cutor, the company, have been around since 1962 and they’ve been dealing with flying and biting bothers throughout their products ever since.
It arrived packed tidily in a small cardboard box, small and unassuming but a cute miniature assassin inside. The Insect-O-Cutor Nomad lifts out of the lamp section and almost doubles in size, proving both a camping light and the pest control feature at once. It even comes with a handy hook to suspend inside a tent. It’s designed especially for outdoor use which is a feature I’ve never seen before. Goodness knows I wish we’d had it in Scotland a few years ago with all the wee beasties desperate to join us on that trip!
We tested the Insect-O-Cutor Nomad with an evening in the garden with company round, there were drinks and nibbles and enough human flesh to satisfy a few biting critters so it seemed like a great test run and I placed it on the table between us. The website says it’s effective for up to 30 metres squared, which seems reasonable for a gathering in the garden or a camping trip. Handily, it’s splash proof too so there’s a little mileage to get in from the rain in our changeable British weather.
The green and blue lights appeal to a wider range of bugs rather than the singular blue you might see at the supermarket for example. This actually shone quite nicely in the garden and looked quite pleasant.
There are two simple buttons on top, each has an image to help you identify what you need, a mosquito to initiate the critter death rays and a light bulb for the camping lantern. It is so easy to use with these buttons.
The only other area is where the charging wire goes, again nice and easy with a rubberised cover to protect the wire port.
We spent a lovely evening in the garden with only one slightly ambitious moth attempting to join the proceedings. We’d not really been bothered by anything. I wondered if we hadn’t really given it a decent test run, until I looked closer at the grille and found a number of frazzled creatures, their pestering days forever ended. I hadn’t even noticed. The Insect-O-Cutor UV LED lights had silently dispatched them like a green and blue electrical grid knight in shining armour.
Although it’s designed for outdoor use I couldn’t resist and the next day we tried it in the kitchen because we’d had the kitchen door open all day. I left it there for a few hours and came back to find a few more frazzled visitors.
It took two evenings of consistent use before we needed to charge it and that’s really simple. The wire, provided, slots straight in to a USB charger port and into the Insect-O-Cutor and you’re ready to dispatch bugs again in no time. The box tells us it lasts 18 hours per charge which is ideal for daily use.
When we’re off on our holidays next I’ll be taking it away with us. It won’t take up much room collapsed back into the light chamber and it weighs very little, an excellent compact travelling companion.
I like that the Insect-O-Cutor does its job without a fuss. There’s no dramatic sizzle or other noises, it’s subtle and effective. I’d buy this for the garden, camping or caravan use. You could even slip it in your bag and pop it on the table at the pub beer garden or at the beach, it really is incredibly portable.
