If You Were Me and Lived in… Portugal by Carole P. Roman Review

Reviewed by Jenny Seymour

The front cover and artwork are very colourful and inviting and the whole range follows the same format, with a globe highlighting the country in question for that book.

It makes it clear that this book is for early readers.

This series of If You Were Me and Lived in… books are for young early readers and are fabulous for engaging children and encouraging them to find out more about different cultures and customs!

This particular book about Portugal was great for my family: my husband and I met in Lisbon, my sister-in-law is Portuguese and my nephew called, Tomas (a name highlighted in the book). My boys loved learning about their culture.

My eldest boy (aged 7) was able to read the book to us (after I explained that the words in brackets were showing him how to pronounce a Portuguese word) and we then talked about what was being said on each page afterwards. We also learnt compass points (north, south, east and west).  It really helped understanding geography of the world.

Some pages include an interactive question, so it encourages family discussion and gives the young reader something to think about. Other pages leave the question unanswered, so a bit of help explaining from the adult is required.

In terms of reading skills, my 5½ year (year 1) old struggled, but my almost 7 year old (year 2) was able to read it fairly fluently. It was lovely to read it together as a family.

The illustrations are amazing and really true to life down to the page numbers being accompanied by the colourful Barcelos Rooster symbol. One suggestion I would make is for more photos to be included – that may give a real view of life in Portugal.

Despite the book being fairly American in language used (mom, hero(?) etc…) and a couple of typos, this is a fabulously engaging book and with a 2 page glossary at the back of the book – this is a great introduction to the Portuguese language and culture.

A really bright, colourful and engaging book of international culture and language. Well written, good quality and good value. I will definitely be buying other books from this series for my 6/7 year old boys.
