I have enjoyed baking since I was a child when I was first taught by my Mum. Over the years I’ve continued home baking as a hobby, often enjoying trying new recipes, creating cakes for special occasions and experimenting with different techniques. I particularly enjoy cake baking and decorating the cakes. I enjoy sugar crafting and have had a go at making a few characters for my children’s birthday cakes. One thing I’ve seen a lot of is gorgeous sugar crafted flowers which look amazing to top cakes with but I’ve not known where to start with making them. If like me you’ve seen lots of beautifully created flowers or enjoy cake modelling or just baking in general then you will love The Sugar Bloom Box which I received last week.

The Sugar Bloom Box is a monthly subscription box. Each month you are sent a box containing all the materials you need to create a sugar flower. Each month features a different bloom. As well as receiving everything you need, you get access to an online tutorial video which guides you through creating your sugar flower or you can use the written instructions. Subscriptions can be monthly for £27, a 3 month commitment for £26 a month or a 6 month commitment for £25 a month. If there’s a past box you would particularly like to try then they can be purchased for £30.

I was sent a previous box – The Sugar Bloom Freesia Box. It arrived in a slim cardboard box that was able to fit through my letterbox. My first impression was how lovely the box had been packaged, with such love and care. Inside the cardboard box the items had been wrapped in tissue paper and sealed with a sticker. There was also a beautiful, handwritten notecard. I carefully unwrapped the packaging to look through the items. The Freesis box I received included:
White florist paste
A cutter
Sugarflair blossom tint in pink and green
Stamen
Wires
Florist tape
Cocktail stick

So as you can see, absolutely everything required is sent in the box which I think is ideal as not knowing the exact materials I need is one reason I’ve not attempted flowers before. There was also an instruction sheet with a couple of photos. However I found these quite hard to follow along with and so as this was my first time creating sugar blooms I decided to scan the QR code. This link took me to a recorded training session which I was able to watch repeatedly. I found this so useful, I was able to pause and rewind as much as I needed. I find visual learning works better for me and I thought the video was easy to understand, very helpful and definitely guided me to create a sugar freesia.

For my first try at creating sugar flowers I am fairly happy with my efforts although it wasn’t perfect but I’d certainly love to have another attempt.

Overall I think The Sugar Bloom boxes are lovely. It is something I would enjoy subscribing to for myself and look forward to receiving each month. Also whether purchasing as a one off box or as a subscription they would make a wonderful and unusual gift for any occasion especially for anyone who enjoys baking or being creative.
