The weather turning colder has got us all in the mood for curling up with a box set. But if you are looking for something a bit different and good fun then look no further than the latest card game to hit the shops. It is the perfect Christmas gift if you have anyone on your list who enjoys card games with an edge.

Horrible Couple (Extra Horrible Edition) is a card game by the same people who created Exploding Kittens. You can play it with friends or two player date mode. It they just contain explicit content and is advised for age is 17+.

The goal of the game is to score points and you do this by winning a round. Win three rounds and you are the overall winner.

Each round consists of a question, a response and a compromise.

A deck of each of these cards is placed on the table. Each player draws five compromise cards. They keep them secret until needed.

One person is chosen to go first (I’ll call them Player 1) and they flip over the top card from the question deck and put it face up in front of them to make the first part of the comic.

Player 1 then takes the top three cars in the response deck, looks at them without showing the other players, and chooses the response card they like the best as a second part of the comic and puts it face up next to the question card.

The final part of the game is for each of the players to choose one of their compromise cards that they think would be the best third card in the three-part comic. Everyone passes their card to Player One, face down. Once they have all the compromise cards, they shuffle them to anonymize, then turn over and read each one out loud.

Player 1 then chooses which you think is the best to complete the comic and that person receives a point. Play continues until everyone has had a turn and the person with the most points has won.

This is a couple’s game with a difference. Scenarios are contemporary and relatable and the outcomes always hilarious. We played it as a couple and found it amusing and it was good to do something different together. We also played with friends and this was even more fun to do as I guess it didn’t seem as personal. Some of the jokes are really sharp, without being cruel or offensive. However I still think you need to have a sense of humour and a thick skin as you do in life really!

It is funnier to watch this game than play it really so works well for parties and you can learn a few things about your friends, their communication styles and their approach to conflict resolution, competitiveness and empathy.

There are two sets of cards for response and compromise so you would have to play this a lot of times to feel it is getting repetitive. The cards are good quality and the game is very easy to play.

With a glass of wine in hand this game is the perfect accompaniment to a winter’s night in.
