Aylesbury Waterside Theatre is situated in the centre of Aylesbury, a lovely modern theatre in walking distance of a popular Wetherspoon’s. There is ample nearby parking which is perfectly walkable. Having had a long couple of weeks, I was certainly in the mood for a good giggle and ready to be entertained, I joined the predominately female audience to wait the start of the show: Hormonal Housewives.
I chose the show because I’m 49, definitely hormonal, and last time I looked a housewife. Quite how I got to this point in my life I don’t know, as for sure, it doesn’t feel five minutes since I was 18 and wondering what I’d spend my weekend wages on.
I guess I thought the show would be a woman’s view on life in your 40s, warts and all, periods, hot flushes, men, kids, work, lack of sleep, life. The show is almost a poor man’s Loose Women on the stage, but not. If I am honest, from the start they didn’t grab me. They didn’t appeal to my inner woman… I was not finding the cliché jokes funny. Don’t get me wrong, some were laughing, but it really wasn’t what I expected. Some shows just aren’t for everyone and I can’t say that this was for me. Maybe I was hormonal, old and tired tonight, sometimes you have to accept you’re in the minority and it’s just not for you. I’m sure the show appealed to some and certainly a night away from the kitchen sink, the kids, the ironing and the old man is a bonus. Just would have like more original laughs, some anecdotes that made me belly laugh and make my knickers damp and think the rest of the women aged 45 plus were on the same page as me.
