Spare Fruit: Fruit Crisps Review

They say that the way to someone’s heart is through their stomach so with Veganuary still in most people’s consciousness and Valentine’s Day just around the corner what a perfect time to try Fruit Crisps from Spare Fruit.
100% fruit, vegan, gluten free, low calorie, air dried and high fibre they offer something for everyone and certainly make a much healthier snack than a packet of potato crisps.
We were sent a packet each of Pear and Apple crisps to try out. Firstly, I was really impressed by the packaging, nice images on the front and a strong bag that meant that the contents were still all in one piece. Fabulous to see that this is a home-grown product too, being produced in Kent. So they’ve got a low carbon footprint and they’re manufactured using fruits that would otherwise go to waste. Yes, although “wonky” fruit and vegetables are starting to find their way into the supermarkets shockingly enough up to 40% of fresh UK produce never makes it into the shops.

What of the taste though? We started with the pear crisps and I confess that, at first bite, I was a little underwhelmed. There was a crispness but an edge of chewiness at the same time which kind of gave them a feel of a stale crisp. However, this was soon replaced by more of a substantial chew and suddenly the flavour of the pear came bursting through. The crisps had a golden colour and you could clearly see that everything is used with only the tiniest of holes where the seeds would have been. All the skin is left on as well for an extra boost of fibre.

So far so good, onto the apple crisps. These were much crispier, and you could instantly taste the apple. Much sweeter than the pear crisps I could see that these would appeal more to kids (or those with a sweet tooth) and could be the ideal replacement for a bag of sweets.
Both bags are comfortably under 100 calories and give you one of your 5 a day. A quick and convenient way to eat fruit, ideal for lunch boxes or eating on the go there really is nothing negative to say. Good for you and good for our planet these really are a win, win snack, what’s not to love.
