My husband and I went to see Henning Wehn’s Get On With It tour at the Nottingham Playhouse last night. We’ve seen Henning on 8 out of 10 Cats plenty of times on TV and loved him, but this was 2 hours of just him and his brilliant sense of humour. What more can you ask for?
Henning came on stage introducing himself as the German Comedy Ambassador and came on clapping away which you just had to join in with. It’s a brilliant venue for an intimate stand up show and one that I would definitely recommend for this type of show.
This first half of his set was about half an hour long and was mainly about his observations of the British way of life. He has lived here for 17 years and I have to say his observations and stories were bloody funny! He touched on the slang language that we use, compared our work ethic and work standards to that of the Germans but in a funny, non-offensive way. The Germans also got a bit of a ripping too, so I guess all is fair.
Before the interval he did pre warn us that the second half was going to be much longer, and it was; probably about an hour long. This half was all about British politics and Brexit. A lot of Brexit. From, as he says, a foreigner’s point of view. It does seem like all we ever hear about at the moment is Brexit, Brexit, Brexit, but I have to say, Henning’s version of events, including what the referendum was really about which was a vote on whether you wanted to be involved in a long-complicated palaver, is hilarious. He somehow made an hour of politics funny!
I know he has been here for the best part of 20 years, and he still has a German accent, but I have to say I loved the fact that when he talks, it is littered with our slang and colloquial phrases. I don’t know any other Germans who used the words ‘innit’, ‘trollied’ and ‘cor blimey’.
Henning Wehn, thank you for a great evening!
