I visited Haydock Racecourse yesterday (20 June 2015) for the first time. It was such a fun day with 4 stands to choose from, the Newton stand which is the cheapest, and then there is Tattersall’s, the County Stand and the Premier Stand which is the most expensive. There are seated stands as well as those just for standing. A lovely champagne bar and plenty of food options. Drinks flow all afternoon either from the many bars or from outlets outside. Drink and food can be expensive but there is plenty to choose from. The venue was immaculate, the staff are friendly and cheerful, and everything is run efficiently. The only problem were the toilets, well the lack of them actually as there were queues for both men and ladies at all times.
After the races we were fortunate enough, along with 20,000 others, to be thoroughly entertained by the little pop queen Kylie Minogue – what an amazing show! She launched into the show in spectacular fashion with Better the Devil You Know, fittingly in a red and black jumpsuit, as the sun set and the evening fell. Her dancers were amazing and her two backing singers Rositta and Roxy were superb. Kylie laughed and joked with the crowd and seemed to be both relaxed and enjoying the show, singing a string of her hits including, Wow, Spinning Around, and On a Night Like This. She entertained the crowd for 90 minutes only stopping for quick costume changes. Her first change was into a delightful short red dress with long red boots. The dancers were dressed up and dancing as she burst onto the stage singing Step Back in Time, followed by Can’t Get You out of my Head, Dance With Me and others. She also sang her all-time favourite song since she was 14 years old, Betty Davis Eyes.
Kylie continued to interact with the crowd, keeping them entertained and even had us doing Mexican waves and dancing hard – plenty of women in heels had to remove them to keep up with the dancing and get home!!
Once changed into her gorgeous gold jumpsuit, Kylie reminisced a bit about her time in Neighbours before continuing the show with hits like I Should Be So Lucky and Locomotion. She even did the favourite Robbie Williams duet (minus Robbie of course), Kids, accompanied by her amazing backing singers. As the show came to a close the crowd all sang and danced along with her to Celebration, before she slowed things down with All the Lovers.
She said she loved being “surrounded in the best way” as her adoring fans converged to every corner of the racecourse for a night of pulsating pop. Screens were all over the Racecourse as well as in the bars and with the incredibly well put together sound and lighting, Kylie was never far away. Those who chose to stay in the stands or in the bars were equally joining in with the singing and dancing.
The atmospheric location and wonderful sunshine helped to make it an occasion to remember. It really was a great day and night and I am sure that the huge crowds made their way home with Kylie’s songs ringing in their ears.
