Hairspray at the Waterside Theatre Aylesbury Review

Baltimore came to Aylesbury last night at the packed-out Waterside Theatre with the award-winning musical comedy Hairspray and had the audience dancing in the aisles! The cast certainly gave a high energy performance!!

Rebecca Mendoza opened the show as Tracy Turnblad with Good Morning Baltimore, a great number with very clever staging!

Tracy’s friend Penny Pingleton, Annelise Liard-Bailey, played a great character and was a good friend to Tracy!

My granddaughter, aged 14, only had eyes for Seaweed, played by Layton Williams, she couldn’t wait to see him in the stage version of Hairspray at Aylesbury. She loved watching the film and certainly wasn’t disappointed last night, she reckons he was amazing! Link Larkin, played by Edward Chitticks, was fabulous too, but didn’t match up to Layton in Meg’s eyes!!

Edna and Wilbur Turnblad, played by Matt Rixon and Norman Pace, made a fantastic couple and their rendition of You’re Timeless to Me was fantastic! They were so comical, bouncing off one another.

Brenda Edwards stood out as Motormouth Maybelle. Gina Murray, as Velma von Tussle, was very credible as being mainly interested in promoting her daughter Amber’s, Aimee Moore, career.

The entire cast were brilliant! The dancing and singing was amazing, there are so many very talented people taking part in this musical.

The show very cleverly dealt with segregation, prejudice, colour and even build, whatever weight or background you could succeed if you had determination!

The scenery was simple but very good. The costumes and hairstyles were true to the period. The music was great and did not drown out the singers as sometimes happens.

It was great to see so many recent graduates from Theatre Schools getting a chance to work alongside experienced performers in a show such as this.

A truly amazing show. The audience were on their feet applauding and cheering at the end, it was definitely a ‘feel good’ event and well worth seeing.

Rating: 5/5
