I was beyond excited when I was asked to review the Gtech AirRam MK2 Cordless Vacuum Cleaner! I have been bemoaning our bulky ageing hoover for a while now, and had also set myself the challenge of completely spring cleaning the house from top to bottom during the school Easter holidays, so the timing couldn’t have been better.

I have to confess that before being asked to do the review I wasn’t aware of Gtech products, but from a little research I found out that the Gtech ethos is to create sensible, easy to use products that do a great job. This sounded great, so I was keen to put the AirRam MK2 through its paces and hoped it would live up to the promise.

I was impressed with how quickly the AirRam arrived, just a couple of days after ordering. I was surprised that it came in a very plain, understated, cardboard box with the only clue as to what was inside being the Gtech name. Upon opening the box I was pleasantly surprised to find that the packaging was minimal and fully recyclable, with not a trace of polystyrene to be seen. The AirRam came in five pieces along with a power cord. At first, I felt a little worried in case it was going to be tricky to put together, but I really shouldn’t have worried at all. It was very easy to put together the handle and connect it to the head. It was all very intuitive and took less than two minutes which was great. The instruction booklet was very clear to follow with pictures and words, which caters for all different types of learning styles. I was also pleasantly surprised to find that the battery was already partly charged so I could try out the AirRam straight away.

On switching on the AirRam, which was very easy and simply a case of pressing the on button with my foot, my immediate impression was that it was quite noisy and sounded very powerful. It was amazingly light and very easy to manoeuvre, the handle is very flexible meaning that the AirRam very easily glides over the floor sucking up everything in its path (note to self, make sure that I pick up anything that I don’t want to be sucked up first next time!). I was really impressed with how well the AirRam cleaned our floors, we have a mixture of laminate, vinyl and carpet in our house and it coped with all of them equally well. I was also really impressed that the handle is so flexible that it goes almost flat to the floor and allows me to clean under our sofas without having to move them – this quite frankly is revolutionary! No more moving the furniture around when I’m vacuuming from now on. What’s more, as if that wasn’t impressive enough, the AirRam also has a light on it so I can actually see under the sofas to check that the floor is clean!

The AirRam is cordless which I have found brilliant. The handle can be lowered and raised, which makes it very compact and easy to store away. When the handle is down the AirRam is the perfect height to sit under the counter in our kitchen so it is always on hand to use. It is also very easy to charge the battery by plugging it in using the power cord. This can be either done by removing the battery and charging it on its own, or keeping the battery in the AirRam and charging it that way. I liked the fact that the battery indicator on the AirRam is very clear, with four green lights to show the status of the battery. When the battery indicator gets to one light, then it needs charging. Whilst charging the lights flash, and when all four of them are on then the battery is full and the AirRam is ready to go again. It takes four hours for the battery to be completely charged, although it is also fine to charge it for one hour just for a quick burst of cleaning. A fully charged battery should last for 40 minutes cleaning time.

The AirRam is also bagless which is great as there is no need to buy anything extra. The bin cylinder fits into the head and is transparent so you can see when it needs emptying. It is very easy to remove and empty, in fact this has been my only negative of the AirRam as I have found that if you tip the bin up at the wrong angle, whilst removing it, the entire contents can empty out and undo all the lovely vacuuming you’ve just done. This isn’t a major problem as I can just suck it all up again, but it is pretty frustrating.

Overall, I absolutely love the AirRam it does a brilliant job of cleaning the floors in my house. Unfortunately, as it is just a floor cleaner I won’t be able to ditch my old hoover completely as I need the attachments to be able to clean my furniture and skirting boards etc. However, having looked at the Gtech website I have seen that there is the option to buy a bundle including the Gtech Multi which would then make a complete cleaning set. There is also a speed cleaning set which looks like it would be an amazing addition and a car kit, I think I need to get saving!
