With Christmas just around the corner, there’ll be lots of opportunities to head out for winter walks with family and friends. These will inevitably be muddy, wet and potentially cold so everyone having a good quality pair of wellington boots is essential to keep feet warm and dry.

I was very pleased to be asked to review a pair of Grubs children’s wellington boots ahead of Christmas as my son has just grown out of his current boots. Grubs are a long-established British family company specialising in making quality footwear, dating back to 1776. These days all Grubs boots are built on four key principles Comfort, Warmth, Waterproof and Grip. Grubs also has great sustainability with 20% of the rubber and materials used in their boots being recycled along with recycled cardboard packaging and the use of renewable energy in production processes.

Grubs sell a wide range of children’s boots, from the brightly coloured “muddies” boots range for younger children to a number of boots for older children. As my son is 10 years old and has size 5 feet, there were limited choices for him so we opted for the Tideline Youth Boot. These are currently available in a choice of three colours – black, plum and navy camo. We chose black. After placing the order, the boots arrived within a couple of days by courier. They came in a large cardboard box, in a plastic postage bag, so the box was unfortunately slightly damaged on arrival. This didn’t matter as we were keeping the boots for ourselves, although it would have been a shame if they had been for a Christmas gift.

My immediate impression upon opening the box was that the Tideline boots were very good quality and sturdy. The boots are made from a combination of rubber and neoprene so are relatively lightweight compared to traditional rubber boots, weighing in at 1kg. The body of the boot is black with some grey trim, along with the Tideline 4.0 and Grubs motif. The neoprene makes the boot soft and flexible so they were easy for my son to get on. He did feel that they were quite high on his leg, they are 310mm so a bit longer than the boots he’s been used to but still a good size. They also seem to be on the large size, they are a size 5 but fit me and I’m a size 6 so my son is going to need to grow into them, although I’m sure we could use some extra thick socks to pad them out for the time being.

The Tideline boots are designed to be comfortable from -20 degrees to + 20 degrees. The body of the boot is made from “insu foam” which has insulating properties, in addition the footbed is cushioned and also contains microscopic nitrogen bubbles to insulate the foot from cold surfaces, perfect for Christmas-time walks. The boots also have a “super dri” lining to ensure that moisture is drawn away from the feet to stop them becoming sweaty which is often a problem with traditional wellies. I was also very impressed with the amount of grip on the sole of the boot, I’m confident that they will be safe and comfortable for my son and will help to minimise any slips on our walks.

Overall, I’m very impressed with the quality and design of these boots. We can’t wait to try them out properly on walks over the Christmas holidays, as so far, they’ve only visited our garden. My only slightly negative point is that it would be great if there were some brighter colours to choose from in this particular boot, as they do look a bit “dull” compared to the boots available for younger children. That said, my son is very happy with having black boots! I would certainly consider buying more Grubs boots in the future as well.
