Gunwharf Quays, Portsmouth

Giraffe is a chain of fun and exciting restaurants across the UK and when I was offered the chance to experience my local restaurant at Gunwharf Quays I jumped at the chance! I quickly checked out their website which is super easy to use and gives a great insight into the ethos into the chain and I couldn’t wait for my visit to come around.
Gunwharf Quays is really easy to find with plenty of parking and the Giraffe restaurant is situated at the waterside edge and right next to the Spinnaker Tower. This location offers you lovely views whilst eating your food.
Upon entering we were greeted by friendly staff that were both very helpful and welcoming. We were seated quickly and given the menus to browse whilst our drinks were prepared (a large coca-cola and a latte). We were told what the soup of the day was and of any unavailable food (of which there was only one). They also bought over a great selection of sauces and condiments to add to your food.
The menu is full of exciting tasty looking food choices and I struggled to pick out what I wanted as I have to say I wanted them all!
In the end I opted for the following choices, Soup of the day which was Carrot and Cumin, Chilli Beef Enchiladas and Fruit Sorbet…
The soup with garlic focaccia was very nice and at first I thought it was a little watery but my opinion was completely changed by the time I had finished it as it made it light and not too heavy for a starter.
My main of Chilli Beef Enchiladas was presented beautifully. It was very filling which was mainly due to the rice and I loved every mouthful.
As I had filled myself up with the first two courses I was hoping the dessert menu would have something quite light to finish with. I was not disappointed; the dessert menu had a choice for everyone. I order the mango sorbet with fruit and it finished off my meal perfectly.
My husband opted for the following, Orange BBQ Duck Tostada, “The Giraffe” Burger, Baked White Chocolate, Mascarpone & Passion Fruit Cheesecake and a non alcoholic cocktail, strawberry smash…
The BBQ duck in my husband’s words was an explosion of tastes. He felt it shouldn’t have worked with all the different flavours with sweet, spicy and savoury but it certainly did!
Giraffe has a great selection of burgers to choose from so he went for their “The Giraffe” classic with the sweet potato fries (extra £1) but he is glad he ordered the different fries as they were really nice. The burger was tasty and made to perfection.
A ‘Strawberry Smash’ non alcoholic cocktail caught his eye and he couldn’t say no! What an impressive looking drink when it arrived at our table! I want to go back and try all their alcoholic cocktails at another time.
To finish off his meal he choose the baked cheesecake with passion fruit, the cheesecake was fantastic but he passed at the passion fruit as he felt it was too sharp but that was his personal choice.
The atmosphere of the restaurant has a lovely feel to it, when we visited it was a weekday lunchtime but I can imagine in an evening it would have a great fun buzz about it and I would love to visit again to experience it at a busier time of the day. They are child friendly and offer a great kids menu with a wide range of ‘grown up’ foods to choose from as well as your kids easy food. They have baby changing facilities and highchairs upon request.
All the staff were efficient and friendly and I would recommend everyone visits a Giraffe restaurant for a good time out.
