Giggling Squid Marlow Review

Giggling-SquidGiggling Squid Marlow

Review by Veronika Royle

I have recently enjoyed a very lush dinner for two at the wonderful – newly opened- Giggling Squid in Marlow. Giggling Squid is a franchise chain with restaurants in Brighton, Crawley, Henley, Horsham, Hove, Maidstone, Reigate, Stratford, Tunbridge Wells and now also Marlow.

We were greeted by the staff and shown to our table, which was nicely positioned near to front of the restaurant. The restaurant ambiance is relaxing and comfortable throughout, and the new décor is an improvement to its previous Mexican owners. Its menu ranges way beyond the standard Thai eatery, offering bold, authentic Thai flavours, delivered by Thai chefs only. If you love Thai food, this is the place to go. If you don’t get Thai food, this is the place to go.

The service was very well received – super friendly staff that was happy to answer any questions that we had – whether this was related to the new location or indeed the food available.

SquidWe chose starters such as Salt and Black Pepper Squid – absolutely divine- lightly floured coated squid deep fried and a scattering of salt, ground black pepper, spring onion and finely sliced chilli, as the batter literally melted and the squid was cooked absolutely to perfection. The pork dumplings, savoury steamed dumpling served with light soy and rice vinegar dip, however weren’t short of praise, although a little bit too spicy for me (my stomach finds even a chicken korma spicy!).

Our main dishes were Pad Thai with Kind Prawns, which was presented in an Egg Basket. My husband chose a never tried before Massaman Chicken Curry: a chicken curry with a strong Muslim influence of Thai food, from the Deep South. Made from dry spices such as cumin, cinnamon, cardamon while other Thai curries are made from fresh herbs.

Unfortunately the two courses filled us up too much, so that we couldn’t taste any deserts, but rest assured that we will be back!

We would give this restaurant:
5* for flavour
5 * for service
4 * for ambiance (it can feel a little crowded as the tables are very close to each other)
5 * for value for money (taken from the Giggling Squid website: Overall we find our customers spend about £10 for lunch and £20–£25 per head with drinks in the evening.)

Rating: 5/5 thumbs_up
